The summit cone of Rinjani seen from the Sembalun route

Mount Rinjani · Crater rim or summit

Crater rim or summit: what separates two days on Rinjani from three – 2,000 metres of ascent with a view, or 3,726 metres at six in the morning

On Rinjani you do not choose between short and long but between two goals. The Senaru crater rim is a viewing balcony at 2,641 metres: a day up, a night above lake and summit, a day down – two days, 2,000 metres of ascent, no ridge, no darkness. The summit is a night climb from a different crater rim: off at two, three to four hours of scree, on 3,726 metres at six – and anyone who wants the lake as well needs the third day, with the longest day of the route. 16 of the 36 packages lead to the Senaru rim, 11 to the summit and back to Sembalun in two days, 13 over the summit to the lake and out, one sleeps at the lake. This page sets the versions side by side: demands, times, altitude, children, park rules, price – and says who each one suits.

Demands: 2,000 metres of ascent in the shade versus 1,090 in the dark

The Senaru day is long and steep but simple: one trail, one goal, posts with breaks, shade until the afternoon. Lombok Volcano Trekking gives 2,000 metres of ascent, HaLoMi eight hours including lunch; Lombok Trekking Info recommends it as the 'only package for beginners', Rinjani Hero sells it to 'families and honeymooners' from age four. What it asks for is stamina for a whole day uphill and knees for the descent – comparable to a big Alpine hut climb, only warmer at the bottom and colder at the top. Anyone who hikes normally manages it; anyone who has never climbed seven hours straight feels it.

The summit is something else, and the operators say so themselves: Cakrawala 'for experienced climbers or anyone able to walk up and down for eight hours a day', Rinjani Trekking Center 'for experienced trekkers', HaLoMi (2 days) 'only for those in good shape with limited time', Jou 'high level of fitness'. The climb from Plawangan Sembalun starts at two or three in the morning after four hours of sleep, follows a ridge and then loose volcanic sand where every step slides half a step back; three to four hours for 1,090 metres, below zero and windy on top. In August 2025 the forestry ministry rated Rinjani Grade IV – the highest of four levels, with Merapi (II) and Gede (III) as recommended prior experience – and since January 2026 requires one guide per four trekkers instead of five, plus a health check the day before (CNA). One trigger was the death of a 26-year-old Brazilian on 21 June 2025, who fell from the summit trail and was recovered only after four days. Anyone booking the summit should know long days, cope with altitude (3,726 m is not extreme, but sleep deprivation feels like another 1,000 metres) and be sure-footed on scree.

The three-day trek adds the descent to the lake and the climb back to summit morning: Go2Rinjani and Rinjani Trekking Center come to around 14 hours between wake-up and the Senaru rim, with 1,090 metres up, 1,700 down, 640 up again. That is the hardest day of all the routes we compare, harder in hours than pass day on the Salkantay or Thorong La – just not as high. HaLoMi's four-day trek breaks it up: summit and descent to the lake on day two, night on the shore, climb back on day three.

What you see – and what you don't

The Senaru crater rim has the better view of what the mountain is famous for: from the campsite the lake lies below, Barujari smokes in the middle, the summit pyramid rises opposite, and in the evening the sun sets behind Agung on Bali (Jou, Rinjani Hero and Lombok Trekking Info describe exactly this picture). What is missing: the summit and the lake up close. You see the hot springs 600 metres below and do not go there.

The two-day summit trek from Sembalun has the sunrise from the top – Lombok, Bali with Agung, Sumbawa, the lake in the shadow of the crater wall – and the way back the same way; you see the lake only from above, the springs not at all, the Senaru rim with the classic view never. It is the version for anyone who wants the summit and nothing else; HaLoMi honestly calls it 'for people with limited time'. The three-day trek has everything: both crater rims, the summit, the lake, the springs, the forest – which is why it is the standard for 13 of the 36 packages. The four-day trek has the same plus an evening by the water that the three-day treks must cut short at 2 pm.

Heights and times from the operators' itineraries (Rinjani Trekking Center, Go2Rinjani, Rinjani Hero, HaLoMi, Go Backpacker) and Wikipedia; walking times including breaks. Package count: 16 crater rim, 11 summit 2 days, 13 three-day, 1 four-day, plus 2 one-day versions (Jou 70, Cakrawala USD 125).

Altitude, cold, sleep: why 3,726 metres are more than they sound

3,726 metres is lower than any pass in Nepal or Peru we compare; altitude sickness is rarely the problem on Rinjani. The problem is the combination: you come from sea level, sleep one night at 2,639 metres and set off at two in the morning after four hours of sleep. Headache and nausea on the summit ridge are mostly lack of sleep, cold and an empty stomach – which is why Rinjani Trekking Center serves 'tea and toast' before the start and Go2Rinjani a light breakfast. Night temperatures on the Sembalun rim are around zero, below that on the summit, with wind (Team Backpacker: 'minus temperatures'); gloves, hat, down or thick fleece jacket are under 'bring your own' with all, only Dhyns (summit) provides a warm jacket, Rinjani Trekking Center rents one for USD 5. On the Senaru crater rim it is 1,100 metres lower and about five degrees milder – and you do not get up at two.

A second difference is the ground. The Senaru trail is forest path and grass steps; the summit ridge is scree and ash, at the steepest point 'two steps up, one back', with drops on both sides. This is where the June 2025 accident happened, and where the ratio of one guide per four guests has applied since 2026. In shared groups of seven to ten (Lombok Trekking Info, Dhyns, Team Backpacker) the guide walks with the fast ones, a porter with the slow ones – anyone unsure of their pace is better off in a small group up to six (Em Adventure, Rinjani Trekking Center, Rinjani Trek Adventure) or private.

Children, families, older trekkers

The crater rim is the family version, and the operators say so: Rinjani Hero from age 4, Lombok Trekking Info crater rim from 5, Syam and Rizal from 6, Green Rinjani and Dhyns from 7, Jou, Samalas and HaLoMi (crater rim) from 10. Whether an eight-year-old walks 2,000 metres of ascent is another question; an extra porter (USD 22–25 a day) carries the child's pack, not the child. For the summit the limits are higher – HaLoMi 9, Lombok Trekking Info 10, Dhyns 16 (youth) or 5 (child, hardly meant seriously), Em Adventure 10, Rinjani Excellent 16 – and the sensible limit higher still: a night climb over scree with exposure is nothing for children under twelve, whatever the age band allows.

At the other end, many age bands exclude older trekkers for no evident reason: HaLoMi crater rim ends at 40, Rizal and Lombok Trekking Info (Sembalun) at 45, HaLoMi summit at 46, Jou, Lombok Volcano Trekking, Cakrawala, Dhyns summit and Samalas crater rim at 50, Lombok Trekking Info at 55, Samalas 3 days and Go Backpacker at 60. Anyone older writes first – the limits are mostly carelessness in setting up the product, not policy. Generous are Green Rinjani, Team Backpacker, Rinjani Trekking Center and L.A Rinjani (to 80), Dewa (no age bands), Rinjani Hero, HaLoMi 3 days and Rinjani Excellent (to 70), Syam, Em Adventure and Rinjani Trek Adventure (to 75).

Who takes which version

Crater rim, 2 days: anyone who wants the view and no night climb; families; anyone who wants two days of mountain after the Gilis, not four; anyone unsure whether seven hours uphill will work – here it is one day, not three. Complete with Dewa (241, cancellable) and HaLoMi (279 with Gili boat); cheap with your own travel at Rinjani Hero (152, ask about the fee), Rizal (160 with fee and insurance, cancellable), Lombok Trekking Info (165). In autumn 2026 only once the Senaru route reopens.

Summit, 2 days: anyone who wants the summit, has little time, is fit and forgoes lake and springs. Complete with Em Adventure (225, hotel in Sembalun, airport pickup, cancellable, group up to 6) – the roundest summit package on the route – or HaLoMi (299); cheap with Dhyns (160) and Lombok Trekking Info (160–200), both without fee and transfer.

Summit, lake, springs, 3 days: anyone who wants everything and can take a 14-hour day. Complete with HaLoMi (390), Go Backpacker (€ 234 shared) and L.A Rinjani (€ 237), private with Go2Rinjani (365, cancellable); cheap with Dhyns (180 shared, cancellable) and Rinjani Hero (220); with shuttle from Kuta and insurance at Rinjani Trekking Center (300).

4 days: anyone who wants the three-day trek but not day two in one go, or who wants to swim and sleep at the lake. HaLoMi only (469 for two, non-refundable).

One-day version: anyone trained, staying in Senaru and after the view only: Jou (70 for two) and Cakrawala (125) go up and down the Senaru rim in one day, around ten hours, fee extra. An option for the practised, for everyone else the harder way to the same picture.

Questions on crater rim or summit

Can I skip the summit if I have booked the three-day trek?

Yes; in practice you stay in camp on the Sembalun rim while the group sets off at two and join them for the lake after breakfast; no operator writes anything about it in the terms, and there is no refund. In shared groups this is no problem because a porter stays in camp anyway; on a private trek say so beforehand.

Is the two-day summit trek harder than the three-day?

Summit day is the same for both. On the two-day trek it is followed by the descent to Sembalun (5 hours, 1,500 metres down), on the three-day by the descent to the lake and the climb back (around 7 hours). The two-day trek is shorter, then, but a day of descent after a night climb hurts the knees about as much; HaLoMi counts 20 to 21 hours of walking in two days. If you have two days and want the summit, take it; if you have three, add the lake.

Is the crater rim enough for 'Rinjani'?

For the picture everyone knows – lake, Barujari, summit in morning light – yes; it is taken from the Senaru rim, not the summit. For the summit itself, no. Most people who have done both would say: the rim is the view, the summit the effort. Anyone with a week on Lombok can separate the two – crater rim from Senaru over two days, later summit from Sembalun over two – and pays about as much as for a three-day trek but sleeps in a bed in between.

Do I need crampons or climbing experience?

No. The summit ridge is walking terrain without protection, but with loose ground and exposure; poles help (Rinjani Hero, Cakrawala, Dhyns provide them, Rinjani Trekking Center rents for USD 5), sturdy shoes are a must, gaiters against the sand are pleasant. There is no snow. What counts is sure footing in the dark by headlamp.

Which version is even possible in autumn 2026?

Since 26 September 2026 the Senaru route has been closed because of the forest fire, Torean since the 23rd; Sembalun is open (park office). So the two-day summit treks from Sembalun run normally, the three-day treks must return via Sembalun instead of Senaru (and lose the Senaru rim), the crater-rim two-day treks do not take place in this form. Ask the operator before booking what will be walked, and take a cancellable package.
