Everest Base Camp: 19 packages between USD 999 and 3,000, and what the difference really buys

The trek to Everest Base Camp is not a mountain but twelve days of walking from teahouse to teahouse – and a flight to Lukla on which everything depends. On Viator more than a hundred operators sell the same programme; we read 22 and show 19. Prices range from USD 999 to 3,000, and the difference is rarely the trek: it is the Lukla flight, the porter, the hotel nights, the meals, the sleeping bag, the helicopter back – and with two products simply the absence of accommodation or food.

Who the Everest Base Camp trek is for

The trek requires no climbing experience and no nights in tents – every night is in a lodge with bed, blanket and dining room, every day there is hot food. It requires time: eleven walking days of five to eight hours, two of them acclimatisation days that must not be cut. And it requires patience with altitude: from Lukla at 2,840 m to Kala Patthar at 5,545 takes eight days, and from Dingboche you sleep above 4,400 m every night. Headache, loss of appetite and poor sleep are part of it; ignore them and you leave by helicopter – at your own expense if the insurance does not pay.

It is the trek on this site where the inclusions lists are longest and most varied. A 14-day package can cost USD 999 or 1,800, and both can be honest – if you read what is missing. We read 22 products on Viator, blocked three because their lists are empty, and gave four a caveat. The remaining twelve are cut so differently that the comparison below is worth it.

The six items that make the price

The Lukla flight – around USD 400 round trip at market rates – is included with 17 products, expressly excluded with Accessible Adventure and only mentioned in the itinerary with Green Valley. The porter, one for two guests with up to 20 kg, is included with eleven products; Outfitter charges USD 20 a day, Scenic and Unique offer him as an add-on, Alpine Ramble and Himalayan Recreation let you carry your own. Hotel nights in Kathmandu are included with half the products, usually two, Explore Himalaya three. Meals on the trek are full board with most – without lunch with Himalayan Recreation, breakfast only with Sunrise, none with Luxury Holidays and Nepal Nirvana. Sleeping bag and down jacket are lent by nine operators; with Ace, the most expensive classic, they are not in the list. The helicopter from Gorak Shep costs USD 1,200 extra with Ace compared with the 14-day package and saves three days of descent.

What is included nowhere: travel insurance with helicopter rescue (mandatory with almost all), the visa, tips, drinks, hot showers, charging and Wi-Fi on the mountain. Together a mid three-figure dollar amount – details on the cost page.

Flight, two hotel nights, permits, full board, porter, filtered water, itinerary with two acclimatisation days – USD 1,800, and a single booker pays the same and joins a group. Sleeping bag not mentioned, cancellation only up to six days.

The only programme that plans the day the weather often takes. Porter, down jacket, sleeping bag, flight, permits included; USD 1,408 for two, 1,276 from ten, 1,787 solo. Hotel nights only in the itinerary, not in the list.

Scenic Nepal – 12 days from the Lukla flight, at most nine guests

For those who organise Kathmandu themselves: flight, permits, eleven nights, full board, sleeping bag, daily oxygen monitoring for USD 1,398. The exclusions list is the longest and clearest – porter and hotel come on top.

Inclusions compared: flight, hotel, porter, sleeping bag, helicopter, cancellation

Fourteen inclusions across 19 products. The lists are longer than on any other trek, but not always clearer: Adventure White Mountain includes and excludes meals and permits at the same time; Green Valley names neither flight nor porter; Outfitter excludes “entrance fees” without saying whether the permits are meant. “Open” means: not written. Asking by message before booking costs nothing and at this price is a duty.

Three products we do not show. Mosaic Adventure has 394 reviews but an inclusions list of three words (“breakfast, lunch, dinner”) and a 70 per cent refund. Great Adventure names “private transportation” as its only inclusion, Pariwar Holidays only platform boilerplate and “suitable for all fitness levels”. With a caveat: Green Valley (flight and porter missing from the list), Adventure White Mountain (contradictions), Outfitter (non-refundable, manual confirmation) and Luxury Holidays (helicopter, but no meals, non-refundable). The Lukla flight: in peak season it leaves from Manthali, four to six hours from Kathmandu, departing at two in the morning. In cloud it is cancelled – Explore Himalaya writes openly that there is then no refund and the helicopter costs extra. Two buffer days in Kathmandu belong in every plan.

Booking terms: from 24 hours to “non-refundable”

Twelve products can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before start – for a trip that depends on a long-haul flight and a weather flight, unusually generous. Ace (all three products) and Himalayan Leisure refund in full up to six days before, partially up to two; Accessible up to three days; Outfitter and Luxury Holidays not at all. Confirmation: all instant except Outfitter (manual). Minimum travellers: Nepal Hiking Team and Ace Heli require two per booking, Mount Face takes exactly one person; all others from one, some with a surcharge (Ace Gokyo 2,400 instead of 2,200, Himalayan Leisure 1,787 instead of 1,408). Age: Himalayan Recreation from 8, otherwise unstated. Languages: Sunrise and Adventure White Mountain list German, Unique Japanese; all others English only. Passport: most require passport details at booking for the permits.

Questions before booking

12, 14 or 15 days – what is the difference?

The trek itself takes eleven days from Lukla to Lukla with all of them. Twelve-day products begin with the flight to Lukla and end with the return flight – you organise Kathmandu yourself. Fourteen days include arrival and departure, fifteen a buffer or city day. Details on the route page.

Why does Ace cost USD 1,800 and Himalayan Recreation 999?

Ace includes porter, lunch, permits and filtered water; Himalayan Recreation does not. Add a porter (around USD 250 for eleven days shared by two), eleven lunches (around 100) and permits (around 40), and the gap shrinks to around 400 dollars – for water filter, fruit, duffel and 1,600 reviews. Do I need a guide?

Since April 2023 Nepal requires a licensed guide for foreign trekkers in national parks; the Khumbu municipality has at times exempted itself, and practice changes. All 19 products include one anyway. If you want to go alone, check the current rule with the Nepal Tourism Board – we do not present it here as settled.

How hard is the trek?

No climbing, no rope, but eleven days of 500 to 800 m of ascent and the altitude. If you hike regularly and manage 15 km with a daypack, you have the fitness; whether your body tolerates the altitude nobody knows in advance. More on the difficulty page.

When is the best time?

October and November (clear, stable, crowded) and March to May (warmer, rhododendron bloom, expeditions at base camp). December to February is cold and empty, June to September monsoon with cloud and flight cancellations. The month table is on the route page.

Can I fly back by helicopter?

Yes, with Ace (USD 3,000 from two people, all in) and Luxury Holidays (USD 2,250, without meals, non-refundable) the shared helicopter Gorak Shep–Lukla is in the package. It saves three days of descent and takes away the part of the trip where the lungs breathe easy again. In bad weather it does not fly – then you walk after all.
