Who the Manaslu Circuit suits

The Manaslu Circuit is a teahouse trek with one pass, but not an easy one: twelve to fourteen days, eight to eleven of them on foot, daily stages of six to eight hours in the gorge, a pass day of nine to ten hours with 650 m up and 1,400 down, nights at 3,500 to 4,500 m in lodges simpler than on the Annapurna or Everest – Dharmasala before the pass is a stone camp with dormitories and tents. If you have walked the Annapurna Circuit or to Everest Base Camp and want to leave the road, the bakeries and the crowds behind, this is for you. If you are going above 5,000 m for the first time, you can too – with the second rest day and a package that goes slowly.

What is different from elsewhere in Nepal: you cannot go alone. The area between Jagat and Dharapani is restricted, the permit is only available through a registered agency with a licensed guide, and the police check it in Jagat, Namrung and at the exit. That is why all 32 products here are packages with a guide, and why the question is not “guide or not” but: what besides the guide is in the price? With Trek Mania at USD 750 it is almost nothing (permits, bus, duffel), with Heaven Himalaya at 1,800 almost everything.

The five questions that set the price

Are meals included? With 25 products yes, three a day. With Trek Mania, Nepal Trek Ways, Manaslu Expert and Trek & Adventure (basic option) no – that is USD 35 to 50 a day at the teahouse, 400 to 600 over twelve days. Sole Encounters is the special case: USD 1,950 with hotel, porter and private transport, but “meals during the trek are not included”. Adventure Master has breakfast and dinner, no lunch. Is the porter included? With 17 products, almost always one per two guests for 20 to 25 kg. Magical Nepal, Nepal Lion, Places Nepal, Himalayan Leisure and Adventure Master exclude him; Outfitter Nepal and Manaslu Expert quote USD 20 a day, Everest Trekking Routes USD 240 for your own. If you carry your twelve-kilo pack yourself, you save 250 to 300 dollars and need the shoulders for it. How many rest days? Almost all have one in Samagaon; seven have a second in Samdo. Himalayan Scenery has only the one in ten days and goes from Samagaon (3,530 m) to Dharmasala (4,460) in one day – that is the price of brevity. Hotel in Kathmandu? 14 packages have two to four nights in a three-star hotel, mostly with breakfast; the others start at the bus station. You need two nights before the trek anyway – one for arrival, one because the permit takes a working day. Bus or private vehicle? Eight to ten hours to Machha Khola, the last three on a track: on the public bus (Magical Nepal, Trek Mania, Everest Trekking Routes, Places Nepal) or in a private jeep (Sole Encounters, Lets Trip, Yak Ru, Nepal Treks, Heaven Himalaya, Alpine Club). The jeep costs USD 150 to 300 more in the package and saves two hours and your spine.

The shortest circuit in the selection with porter, three meals, all permits and a guide in German on request. The price of the ten days is a single rest day and a 900-metre day from Samagaon to Dharmasala – for acclimatised trekkers who cannot be away from Kathmandu for longer.

Restricted area and guide. Between Jagat and Dharapani the Restricted Area Permit (RAP) of the Department of Immigration applies: only through a registered agency, only with a licensed guide, only with your original passport in Kathmandu (one working day, Sunday to Friday). Until March 2026 at least two travellers were mandatory; according to several operators the authority admitted single trekkers with a guide on 22 March 2026 – an official text was not accessible to us, and Adventure Glacier, Discover Altitude, Nepal Trek Ways, Everest Trekking Routes, World Himalaya, Yak Ru and Himalayan Leisure still require two people. Contradictions in the lists: Sole Encounters names breakfast and dinner and excludes “meals on the trek”; Accessible Adventure names breakfast only and writes “lunch and dinner included” into the exclusions; Great Vision excludes the hotel and names it in the itinerary. We show it as it stands. Not in the comparison: 30 more Viator products with fewer than three reviews or without a price in the data (Nepal Mountain Trekkers), pure Tsum Valley treks without the pass, and combinations with the Annapurna Circuit. Altitude figures vary between operators by up to 200 m; we give the common values (Larke La 5,106 m, Samagaon 3,530, Dharmasala 4,460).

Costs: the bill for one person from Kathmandu

On the Manaslu the list price is usually two thirds of the bill. What is added: the visa (USD 30 for 15 days, 50 for 30, on arrival), insurance with helicopter rescue to 5,500 m (USD 70 to 140 for two weeks, required by almost all operators), tips for guide and porter (usually USD 10 to 15 a day for the guide, 5 to 8 per porter and day, shared by the group), the extras in the teahouses (hot shower USD 3 to 5, charging 2 to 5, Wi-Fi 3 to 5, water 1 to 3 – 80 to 150 dollars over twelve days), hotel nights in Kathmandu where not included (USD 30 to 60 in Thamel), and with the frame packages meals and teahouse (USD 35 to 50 a day) and the porter (20 to 25 a day). Booking terms: 24 hours with most, passport in advance with all

26 of the 32 products can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before start – for a trek whose permit is applied for with your passport a working day earlier, that means in practice: until the permit day. Trek Mania, World Himalaya and Himalayas On Foot refund in full only up to six days before, Places Nepal, Three Jewels and Nepal Trek Ways up to three days; Alpine Luxury refunds nothing. Outfitter Nepal confirms only after review. Minimum participants: Seven products require two people (Everest Trekking Routes, Discover Altitude, Adventure Glacier, World Himalaya, Nepal Trek Ways, Yak Ru, Himalayan Leisure); the others take single travellers and mostly charge a supplement – Magical Nepal 1,349 instead of 1,081, Sole Encounters 2,069 alone and 1,725 from eleven. Passport: All need the original passport with a valid visa and two passport photos the day before the trek in Kathmandu; Sole Encounters, Himalayan Leisure and Adventure Glacier say explicitly that they collect it. Age: The age bands are data junk with a third of the products (World Himalaya “adults 30–40”, Discover Altitude “20–28”); to be taken seriously are upper limits such as 60 (Everest Trekking Routes), 65 (Outfitter, Alpine Luxury) and 70 (many). Questions before booking

How hard is the Manaslu Circuit?

Harder than the Annapurna Circuit, easier than Everest Base Camp with Gokyo: eight to eleven days on foot, six to eight hours a day, a pass at 5,106 m with a long, often icy descent, simple lodges and a camp of stone huts before the pass. Anyone who hikes regularly and plans two rest days can do it; the altitude is the risk, not the trail. More on the route page.

Do I need a guide?

Yes, without exception: the restricted area between Jagat and Dharapani is accessible only with a Restricted Area Permit, which a registered agency applies for on behalf of a licensed guide and his guests. Checkpoints in Jagat, Namrung and Dharapani check it. That is why there are no products without a guide here. Details on the permit page.

Can I book alone?

With 25 of the 32 products yes, with a supplement. The two-person rule of the restricted area is said to have been lifted on 22 March 2026 – operators report this, an official text was not accessible to us. Seven operators still require two people; in the past the practice of paying for a second “ghost permit” helped.

What do the permits cost?

Restricted Area Permit USD 100 for the first seven days and 15 per further day from September to November, 75 and 10 from December to August; plus MCAP and ACAP at NPR 3,000 each (around USD 22) and TIMS 2,000. For a typical circuit with nine days in the restricted area around USD 190 in high season. 27 products include everything, Trek & Adventure has you pay in cash, Trek Mania pays only seven days of RAP.

When is the best time?

October and November: clear, dry, the pass free of snow, the lodges full. March to May second choice with rhododendrons and more cloud. December to February the pass is often closed, the huts at Dharmasala shut. June to September monsoon with landslides on the track and leeches in the lower valley – but the RAP is cheaper and the lodges empty.

Manaslu or Annapurna Circuit?

Manaslu for quiet, culture and a real pass without a road; Annapurna for variety, comfort, Tilicho Lake and the higher Thorong La. Both together take 18 to 22 days, because the Manaslu ends at Dharapani on the Annapurna Circuit. The comparison has the table.

What are the teahouses like?

Simpler than on the Annapurna: twin rooms with wooden walls, shared bathroom, shower for a fee up to Samagaon, mostly none above. Dharmasala before the pass is a camp with dormitories and tents. Power and Wi-Fi exist up to Samdo for a fee. A sleeping bag to minus ten degrees is essential – twelve packages provide it, the others do not.
