Who Rainbow Mountain suits

Vinicunca is not a trek but a climb: three and a half kilometres on a wide trail, 350 to 450 m of ascent, one and a half to two hours. Anyone who hikes can do it – if the altitude allows. The trail begins at 4,600 to 4,800 m, where Kilimanjaro has its last hut, and ends at 5,036. If you arrive from Lima and sit in the bus at four the next morning, you have a problem no guide can solve. If you have spent two, better three nights in Cusco, seen the Sacred Valley and perhaps walked the Inca Trail, the day is exactly that: a long, cold, beautiful day.

The groups are large (up to 15, with Viajes Speedy 30), the buses full, the viewpoint between eight and eleven a fairground with stalls and alpacas in ponchos. If you do not want that, you have three ways out: the late start at eight (Peru Private Tours, Andina Expeditions), the alternative mountain Palccoyo with a 40-minute walk and almost nobody, or the trek from Ausangate, where you stand alone on the ridge at six in the morning and the buses only arrive at nine. Families with children take Palccoyo; so does anyone worried about the altitude.

The five questions that set the price

Entrance included or cash? The community entrance at Vinicunca costs 30 soles (around USD 8), cash only, soles only. Ten of the 32 products include it (Rainbow Mountain Travels, Inka Altitude, TreXperience, Vidal, VIPAC, Machu Picchu Tours, Inca Highlands, Machu Picchu Peru Tours, Salkantay Trekking, Peru Hike, Andean Path, Apu Ausangate), sixteen exclude it, six say nothing. Chullos at USD 25 plus 8 entrance is still cheaper than Rainbow Mountain Travels at 49 with entrance – but you should have the soles in your pocket. Three o'clock or eight? The early departure is the standard and the reason the viewpoint is full at nine. Peru Private Tours leaves at eight and is at the top when the others are at lunch; that costs 95 instead of 25 to 50, and you lose breakfast. Rainbow Mountain Travels leaves at three and is there before everyone. Group or private? Private means your own vehicle and guide, from two people, USD 99 (MachuPicchu Journey, with a German-speaking guide) to 175 per person. The advantage is time: no waiting for the slowest, Red Valley without discussion. Back to the hotel? Chullos, JISA, Rainbow Mountain Travels and Andina drop you at the plaza – after twelve hours, still a walk. Peru Private Tours explicitly advertises “door to door”. Day or trek? The two-day tour costs ten times the day trip (USD 415 to 499), the three-day tour 399 to 790. For that: tent below Ausangate, cook, horses, and a morning at Vinicunca without buses. If you do not mind a night at 4,700 to 5,000 m, you get a different journey.

Ten inclusions across 32 products. The first row says where the tour goes and when it leaves – for this destination the time matters more than the price. Five products are shown with a caveat: Inka Altitude (age band demands six adults per booking), Kantu Peru Tours (list without lunch, no itinerary), Vidal Expeditions day trip (no itinerary), Machu Picchu Tours (7 am in the title, 4:30 in the itinerary) and Bamba (tent night without a tent in the list). “Unclear” means: not written.

Costs: the bill for one person from Cusco

On the day trip the list price is often only half. Add: entrance 30 soles (around USD 8) with 16 products, Red Valley 30 soles with all but TreXperience and the treks, the horse if the altitude strikes (80 to 120 soles, USD 22 to 33 – Peru Private Tours gives the figures, Andina 90 soles, Crossover USD 35), water and snacks (USD 2 to 3), tips for guide and driver (USD 5 per person is usual, no operator figure), and with the plaza products the taxi to the hotel (USD 1 to 2). On the trek add sleeping bag rental (where not included, USD 15 to 25 for three days, guide value), tips for cook and horsemen (USD 10 per day and person is usual) and dinner on the last day.

Booking terms: 24 hours for the day trips, no refund with three treks

All 22 day trips can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before start and are confirmed instantly. The treks differ: FlashpackerConnect, Salkantay Trekking (both) and Bamba refund nothing, FLY Cusco in full only up to six days before; Salkantay Trekking confirms only after review, Bamba confirms instantly and then checks. Peru Hike, Andean Path, Andean Great Treks, Apu Ausangate and Andina's hotel night stay at 24 hours. Minimum participants: Seven products require two people per booking (all private tours, Crossover, FlashpackerConnect, FLY Cusco, Andean Great Treks, Apu Ausangate). Age: The upper limits are meant seriously – Chullos up to 70, Andina up to 60 (“not over 65”), Crossover only 18 to 50, Andean Trekking up to 55; open upwards are Peru Private Tours (90), TreXperience and Palcoyo Tours. Passport details: TreXperience and Salkantay Trekking want them at booking. Weather: Andina and FlashpackerConnect run “in all weather”; in the rainy season (December to March) that means snow on the ridge and no colours.
