Sapa trekking: 25 packages for two or three days, and the question of where you sleep

The trek from Sa Pa into the Muong Hoa valley is the most accessible multi-day tour on this website: a day down through rice terraces to the villages of the Hmong and Giay, a night with a family, a morning back through bamboo forest. Almost every package walks the same way – Y Linh Ho, Lao Chai, Ta Van, Giang Ta Chai. What sets them apart is everything else: whether the bus from Hanoi is included, whether you sleep in a dorm, a private room or a hotel, whether entrance fees and a cooking class are in, and whether the guide comes from the village. We read 26 products and show 25.

Who the Sa Pa trek suits

Sa Pa is the trek for people who have two days, do not want altitude and want to see a village that is not there only for them. The trails are farm tracks and clay paths between terraces, downhill on day one, uphill on day two; slippery in rain, otherwise easy. You walk three to six hours a day, carry only a daypack, eat with the family and sleep under a mosquito net. The Hmong women who walk with you and sell at the village entrance, the motorbikes on the path, the homestays with Wi-Fi – that is Sa Pa today. If you want solitude, take the products heading north (Sapa Original Trek) or the third day to Ban Ho.

The packages from Hanoi are logistics: pickup at six, sleeper bus or limousine, 1 pm Sa Pa, trek in the afternoon, night in the village, trek in the morning, bus at half past three, 10 pm Hanoi. For two days you see a lot; the drive is the price. The packages from Sa Pa are for those who reach the town themselves – night train to Lao Cai, bus, or on the way to Ha Giang – and who want to book the guide directly: smaller, cheaper, often led by Hmong women who live in the valley.

Not on this page: day trips to Cat Cat or Ta Van, Fansipan by cable car only, round trips with Halong Bay or Ha Giang, motorbike tours. Fansipan on foot in two days is in, because it is a trek.

The five questions that make the price

From Hanoi or from Sa Pa? The bus costs USD 20 to 30 more in the package than the same tour from Sa Pa – Vietnam Travel Top sells both: USD 89 with sleeper bus, 59 to 69 from Sa Pa. Limousine (minibus with individual seats) 20 to 40 more, night train out and bus back 30 to 50 more. Dorm, room or hotel? The stilt-house dorm is the cheapest night, the private room or bungalow with bathroom costs 10 to 20 more, the hotel night in Sa Pa replaces the village (Vietnam Travel Top hotel 109, Crossing 3-star 148). Two or three days? The third day from Hanoi is usually Cat Cat and a hotel night (Sapa May 125, Vietnam Travel Top 139); the third day from Sa Pa is Ban Ho (Trekking Tour Sapa 170, David Tran 110). Alone? Almost all charge solo surcharges of USD 10 to 60; Vietnam Real Tour, Sapa May from Sa Pa, Best Vietnam, LaLa and Indigo do not. David Tran and the Fansipan trek require two people. What is in? All have guide, meals and the night. Entrance fees are named by 15 products, a cooking class by seven, luggage transfer to the village by the Vietnam Travel Top tours.

The village entrance fees (Cat Cat, Ta Van, Giang Ta Chai) are small – according to operators' websites around USD 1 to 4 per village, a guide value – but they are the item that is most often missing. The sum is below.

Sapa May – 2 days, cabin bus, private room, cooking class

USD 89 for two for the classic with a clear list: bus both ways, 13 km, private room at Goong House, cooking class, four meals, luggage at the hotel. Entrance fees not mentioned. For those who want two days of village from Hanoi and their own room in the evening.

Cost: the sum for one person from Hanoi

In Sa Pa the list price is almost the whole price. What comes on top: entrance fees with ten products (guide value USD 5 to 10 for the villages of a two-day tour), drinks at the homestay (beer and water USD 1 to 2), tips for guide and family (USD 5 to 10 per person and day is usual, no operator states it), the taxi from the bus station to your hotel in Hanoi at 10 pm (USD 2 to 5), with Vietnam Travel Top the hotel night before. If you book from Sa Pa, add the night train or bus from Hanoi: sleeper bus USD 15 to 25 each way, night train 30 to 60 by class – guide values from operator texts, not booked ourselves.

On return all drop you at the bus station or meeting point – “hotel on your own”. Questions before booking

Book from Hanoi or from Sa Pa?

From Hanoi if Sa Pa is a two- or three-day excursion and you do not want to organise the journey yourself. From Sa Pa if you are staying there anyway, continue to Ha Giang or want to book the guide directly – the tours from Sa Pa are USD 20 to 50 cheaper and smaller. Details on the itinerary page.

How hard is the trek?

Two days are 12 to 17 km, first 600 m downhill, then 300 uphill, on farm tracks and clay paths – slippery in rain. Sapa May and Travel New Land require “high fitness”, Vietnam Travel Top “all fitness levels”; the truth is in between. Three days to Ban Ho are 36 km and a different trek.

Homestay – what does it mean here?

A wooden or stilt house in Ta Van with mattresses, mosquito net, shower and a family that cooks. The range goes from a dorm with ten mattresses to a bungalow with its own bathroom. When is the best time?

September and October, when the rice turns yellow, and March to May, when the terraces are flooded and mirror the sky. June to August is green, hot and wet; December to February cold and foggy, the operators warn about it themselves (Vietnam Travel Top: “normally cold from September to March, foggy from December to March”). The trek runs all year.

Sa Pa or Ha Giang?

Sa Pa is on foot, two days, villages and terraces; Ha Giang is by motorbike, three to four days, passes and gorges. Both together fit into a week. The comparison has its own page.

Why is Trekking Tour Sapa at USD 170 the most expensive product from Sa Pa?

Because it goes three times as far: 36 km, two nights, five villages, village entrance fees and the drive back from Ban Ho. Per day it is USD 57 – in line. David Tran walks the same route for 110 for two, with simpler houses and a minimum of two people.
