Annapurna Circuit: 21 packages between 8 and 22 days, and the question of how much road you buy

The Annapurna Circuit was once three weeks on foot around an eight-thousander massif. Today the road reaches into the mountains on both sides, and the packages on Viator differ above all in how much of it they use: jeep to Chame and bus from Muktinath in eight days, or Bhulbhule to Nayapul on foot in twenty-two. In between lie Tilicho Lake, Poon Hill, the flight from Jomsom – and prices from USD 590 to 2,400 whose difference is rarely the pass.

Who the Annapurna Circuit is for

The Circuit is the trek for people who want variety: rice terraces and waterfalls in the Marsyangdi valley, Tibetan villages around Manang, a pass above 5,000 m, then the desert of Mustang, the temple of Muktinath and the deepest gorge on earth. Every night in a lodge, every day a different climate. It is longer than Annapurna Base Camp and higher, but less steep; Thorong La is a broad saddle, not climbing – just high, cold and early.

And it is the trek where the packages vary most in length. An 8-day package and a 22-day package carry the same name; in between lie jeep roads, a lake, a viewpoint hill, a flight. We read 22 products, blocked one because its list is empty, and gave four a caveat. The remaining 17 are so different that the question is not “which operator” but “which Circuit”.

The five questions that make the price and the days

How far does the jeep go? To Chame (2,670 m) saves three trekking days, to Dharapani two, to Bhulbhule none. Five products drive to Chame, six to Jagat, Chamje or Dharapani, four walk from Bhulbhule or Syange. Tilicho Lake? Two to three days and a night at 4,150 m for the lake at 4,919 – five products include it. What after the pass? Bus from Muktinath to Pokhara (Nepal High, Trek & Adventure), jeep via Jomsom (Bold, CAN, MTA, Recreation, Glorious), flight from Jomsom (HSJ, Nepal Social, Adventure Bound Short), or on foot via Tatopani and Poon Hill to Nayapul (Ace, Accessible, Peregrine, Outfitter, Discovery World). Meals? Fourteen products have full board on the trek; Trek & Adventure, CAN, Everest Holiday Budget and Sole exclude them, HSJ and Accessible name breakfast only. Porter? Five include one for two guests, three at a surcharge, eleven name none or exclude him. A porter carries 20 to 25 kg; without him you carry sleeping bag and down jacket over the pass.

What is included nowhere: insurance, visa, tips, drinks, hot showers, charging, Wi-Fi – and oxygen, oximeter or Diamox, which not a single product names. The sum is on the cost page.

Thirteen inclusions across 21 products. The first row says where the trek begins and ends – on the Circuit that matters more than any other. Four products have no itinerary in the data (Adventure Bound, Nature Explore, Great Adventure, Adventure Bound Short); for them we inferred from transport lists and marked it “open”. Outfitter describes a different hike, Nepal Social includes and excludes food, Bold charges USD 900 for the porter option. “Open” means: not written. Asking before booking costs one message.

One product we do not show. Himalayan Trekking Path names private transport, breakfast and hotels as inclusions – no meals, no permits, no lodges, no itinerary. With a caveat: Discovery World (431 reviews, but non-refundable and manually confirmed), Great Adventure (German as a guide language, but no itinerary), Outfitter (description of the Sarangkot hike), Nepal Social (contradictions on meals and price). The pass: in October 2014 more than 40 people died on Thorong La in a blizzard that came from a cyclone over India. Since then there are weather warnings, a registration point in Manang and the rule of being on top before ten. No package includes a buffer day for the pass – if you go in October or spring, plan one yourself.

Booking terms: 24 hours with most, one exception without refund

Fourteen products can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before start. Ace and CAN refund in full up to three days before, Adventure Bound, Outfitter and MTA up to six, Discovery World not at all. Confirmation: Discovery World and Outfitter manual, all others instant. Minimum: Discovery World and Adventure Bound Short at least two; otherwise from one person, some with a surcharge (Sole 2,000 instead of 1,800, Outfitter 1,294 instead of 994). Maximum: Trek & Adventure seven, Peregrine eight. Languages: Great Adventure, Nature Explore, Nepal Social, Sole and Mount Mania list German; Adventure Bound Short Italian. Passport: Nepal Social requires passport details at booking.

Questions before booking

How many days does the Circuit really need?

For the pass with safe acclimatisation: Chame to Muktinath in six trekking days with a rest day in Manang – that is the core all have except Everest Holiday. What comes before and after is choice: three days of Marsyangdi valley on foot, two to three days of Tilicho, three days of Tatopani and Poon Hill. Details on the route page.

Circuit or Base Camp?

Circuit: longer, higher, more varied, with pass and desert; Base Camp: shorter, lower, steeper, in an amphitheatre. If you want two weeks and the pass, walk the Circuit; if you want a week and the amphitheatre, the Sanctuary. The comparison has its own page.

Is the road really that bad?

It is there, on both sides, and it is dusty. Between Besisahar and Chame jeeps and trekkers share the valley; between Muktinath and Tatopani buses run. The NATT trails on the opposite side avoid most of it, and the guides know them – but only if the package has the days for it. If you do not want the road, book twelve days or more, or deliberately drive to Chame and walk up high.

When is the best time?

October and November (clear, stable, crowded) and March to April (warmer, rhododendron below, snow on the pass possible). Manang and Mustang lie in the rain shadow – the Circuit works in the monsoon too, with cloud in the Marsyangdi valley and views up high. December to February the pass is often closed. Do I need a guide?

Since April 2023 Nepal requires a licensed guide for foreign trekkers in protected areas; in the Annapurna Conservation Area this is checked at the ACAP posts. All 21 products include one. If you hire one yourself, you pay around USD 25 to 35 a day in Kathmandu or Pokhara – guide figure.

Why does Peregrine cost 2,400 and Nepal High 975?

Peregrine has a 4-star hotel in Pokhara, at most eight guests and Tatopani plus Poon Hill; Nepal High drives from Muktinath and has 3-star hotels. Both have full board and permits, neither has a porter in the list. The rest is margin – the data does not explain the gap. Details on the cost page.
