As of 27 September 2026: Senaru route closed. Because of a forest fire in the Torean area (since 22 September, around 590 hectares according to the press) the park office Balai TNGR closed the Torean route on 23 September and the Senaru route on 26 September until further notice (announcement PG.7/T.39/TU/KSA.04.01/B/09/2026). The Sembalun route stays open; anyone booked for Senaru can reschedule or enter and exit via Sembalun. Since 1 September the park has been open on a limited basis under a forestry ministry circular on fire prevention, online booking in the eRinjani system was suspended, paid bookings remain valid. The two-day packages to the Senaru crater rim are directly affected – ask the operator before booking whether and how the trek runs. The regular winter closure follows: in 2026 the park was closed from 1 January to 31 March.

Who Rinjani suits – and which version

Rinjani is not a teahouse trek and not a hut tour: you sleep in a tent, porters carry tent, kitchen and food, you carry your own pack (extra porter USD 22 to 25 a day at Green Rinjani and Rinjani Hero). The climb to the Senaru crater rim is a single day of 2,000 metres of ascent; operators call it 'for beginners and families' (Rinjani Hero from age 4, Jou from 10, Green Rinjani from 7), but Lombok Volcano Trekking more honestly calls it 'challenging'. Anyone who manages it gets the view it is all about: lake, Barujari and summit from the campsite, sunset over Agung on Bali.

The summit is a different category. It is reached only from Sembalun, starts at two in the morning and takes three to four hours over loose scree and a narrow ridge; in 2025 the forestry ministry rated Rinjani Grade IV, the top level, and since January 2026 requires one guide per four trekkers. In June 2025 a Brazilian hiker died here after falling from the summit trail. Anyone wanting the summit should know long days with 1,500 metres of ascent – Rinjani Trekking Center and Cakrawala write 'for experienced trekkers', HaLoMi quotes 20 to 21 hours of walking in two days for its two-day summit. The three-day version is the complete one: summit on the second morning, then down to the lake, swim, hot springs, and in the afternoon another 600 metres up to the Senaru rim. HaLoMi's four-day trek takes the sting out of that second day by sleeping at the lake.

The mountain does not suit anyone travelling between January and March, when the park is closed, and this autumn anyone set on the Senaru route (see the notice above). If you are torn between crater rim and summit, read Crater rim or summit: 2 or 3 days.

The four questions that set the price

Is the park fee included? Since 3 November 2025 the fee for foreigners on the Senaru, Sembalun and Torean routes is IDR 250,000 per person per day (forestry ministry, regulation 17/2025) – 500,000 for a two-day trek, 750,000 for three, roughly USD 30 and 45. 18 packages list it as included (HaLoMi, Em Adventure, Dewa, Cakrawala, Team Backpacker, Rinjani Trekking Center, Go Backpacker, L.A Rinjani, Go2Rinjani, Rinjani Excellent, Samalas, Syam, Rizal). 13 exclude it and usually state the amount – Lombok Trekking Info and Dhyns still with the old 200,000 or 250,000, Jou with 750,000 for three days. Cakrawala and Em Adventure list it as included but at the old rates of 200,000 and 150,000 – whether they charge the difference is open. Lombok Volcano Trekking, the most-reviewed product, sends a PayPal invoice for it after booking. Five say nothing: Green Rinjani, Rinjani Hero (both; one exclusion ends at 'Mount Rinjani'), Dhyns crater rim, HaLoMi 4 days.

Who gets me to Senaru? From Bangsal, where the boats from Bali and the Gilis land, it is an hour and a half; from Praya airport or Kuta Lombok almost three. 15 packages pick up anywhere in Lombok: HaLoMi (all four, with a boat back to the Gilis), Team Backpacker, Go Backpacker, L.A Rinjani (shared groups dropped only at Bangsal, Senggigi, Mataram), Rinjani Trekking Center (shuttle from Kuta at 4 am on trek day), Em Adventure (eight places), Rinjani Excellent (summit), Dewa, Go2Rinjani, Green Rinjani. Lombok Trekking Info picks up only in Senaru or Sembalun, Cakrawala only in Senaru and drives to Senggigi, Mataram or Bangsal afterwards. Jou, Rinjani Trek Adventure, Lombok Volcano Trekking, Rinjani Hero and Dhyns leave getting there entirely to you – awkward by public bemo, USD 40 to 150 per vehicle by private car (operator listings, guide value).

Where do I sleep before the start? All treks start at seven or eight in Senaru or Sembalun; nobody arriving from Bali the same morning makes that. 14 packages include the night: HaLoMi (Senaru, all four), Em Adventure (Sembalun), Team Backpacker (budget basic, deluxe with AC), Go Backpacker, L.A Rinjani, Go2Rinjani, Dewa, Rinjani Excellent (summit), Samalas (Villa Bambu per option), Green Rinjani. Lombok Trekking Info names three lodgings in Senaru for its private option and excludes the night otherwise. Rinjani Excellent (crater rim) excludes the room in the list and names it in the itinerary – a contradiction we show with a caveat. Rinjani Trekking Center picks up at 4 am and assumes you are somewhere in Lombok the day before.

Can I cancel? 17 products yes: Dewa, Em Adventure, Go2Rinjani, Rinjani Excellent (crater rim 24 hours, summit 3 days), Samalas (both), Syam (both), Rizal, Dhyns (all three), Rinjani Trek Adventure (both), Green Rinjani, Cakrawala (one-day). HaLoMi Trekker – 4 days with a tent night at Segara Anak, hotel and transfer, USD 469 for two

The only four-day trek with reviews (66 at 5.0): summit on the second morning, then down to the lake and sleep there, a relaxed climb to the Senaru rim on day three, down by noon on day four. Hotel night, pickup at any harbour, full board, Gili boat. The park fee – unlike the other three HaLoMi products – is not in the list. Non-refundable, alone USD 747. Contradictions in the lists. Many operators' age bands are unusable: Cakrawala sells 'adults 25–30' and 'seniors 35–50', Samalas 'adults 20–29', HaLoMi 26–40 for the crater rim and 9–46 for the two-day summit, Rinjani Excellent (summit) 16–30 and 45–75 – anyone in between cannot book regularly and should write first. Viator's durations rarely match the title: '2D1N' products with 4,320 minutes count the arrival day (HaLoMi, Rinjani Excellent, Syam private), Lombok Trekking Info's option texts say '4 days' for the three-day trek. Cakrawala and Em Adventure list the fee at outdated rates (200,000 and 150,000 instead of IDR 250,000). Samalas lists 15 guide languages from Bengali to Swedish. Green Rinjani lists 'alcoholic beverages' as an inclusion and charges USD 450 where others take 165. Team Backpacker sells a three-day trek under the URL title '2D1N Rim'. Rinjani Hero 3 days lists 'Sembalun Village' as an exclusion. Operators put the Senaru rim at 2,640 to 2,642 and the lake at 2,000 to 2,008 metres. Not in the comparison: Lombok Trekking by Idien 437458P1 (USD 225, inclusions only 'lunch, dinner'), Green Rinjani one-day 108303P8 (USD 310 for one day, list only transport and two meals, manual confirmation only) and all products with fewer than ten reviews.

Cost: the bill for one person travelling as a pair

On Rinjani the list price is rarely the trip price. What comes on top: the park fee with 13 packages (IDR 250,000 a day), getting to Senaru with 21, the night before with 22, and with all of them tips for guide and porters, drinks other than water, an extra porter if you do not want to carry your pack (USD 22–25 a day), and rental gear for jacket or poles (Rinjani Trekking Center: USD 5). Since October 2025 Rinjani also has mandatory insurance with helicopter rescue (forestry ministry); eight operators list insurance, the amount appears nowhere. Five bills, in US dollars and euros at the exchange rate of 28 September 2026:

Booking terms: tiered prices, passport details, age bands

Almost all products are tiered by group size; we show the price for two travellers. Alone you pay 428 to 747 at HaLoMi, 230 to 560 at Lombok Trekking Info, USD 590 at Go2Rinjani; Rinjani Hero, Cakrawala, Dhyns, Green Rinjani, Samalas, Rinjani Trek Adventure, Dewa, Rinjani Trekking Center and Team Backpacker (budget) take solo travellers with no or a small surcharge. Rinjani Excellent sells the group option of its summit trek only from eight persons per booking. Confirmation: instant with 30, after review with HaLoMi (all four), Team Backpacker, Go Backpacker, L.A Rinjani (up to nine days) and Green Rinjani (up to 24 hours). Questions before booking

Do I need a permit, and who gets it?

Yes. The park sells trekking tickets only through the eRinjani system (app), tied to passport details, in quotas of 150 a day for Senaru and Sembalun and 100 each for Torean, Aik Berik, Tetebatu and Timbanuh – 700 for the whole park (park office, April 2025). Foreigners may only go with a licensed guide; the operator registers the group, which is why every product asks for passport number, nationality and expiry. For 2026 sales opened on 6 March for dates from 1 April; the first April days sold out within weeks (press). In the July/August high season and around Indonesian holidays, weeks of lead time pay off; otherwise days are enough.

What does the park fee cost, and why is it not always included?

IDR 250,000 per person per day for foreigners on the main routes Senaru, Sembalun and Torean (class 1), 200,000 on Aik Berik, Tetebatu and Timbanuh – since 3 November 2025 under forestry ministry regulation 17/2025; Indonesians pay 50,000 (weekday) to 75,000 (weekend). For two days that is 500,000, for three 750,000 rupiah, roughly USD 30 and 45. Many operators leave it out of the price because it is paid at the gate through the app; that is not a warning sign as long as the amount is stated. It is a warning sign when it is neither included nor excluded – then ask.

Senaru or Sembalun – what is the difference?

Senaru (601 m) lies in the north on the road from Bangsal: forest route, 2,000 metres of ascent in a day, campsite above the lake, no access to the summit. Sembalun (1,156 m) lies in the east: open savanna, then the steep 'hills of regret', campsite at the foot of the summit ridge. Two-day crater-rim treks go up and down Senaru; two-day summit treks go up and down Sembalun; three-day treks go up Sembalun and down Senaru. In autumn 2026 Senaru is closed because of the forest fire; the park office reroutes to Sembalun. More on the itinerary page.

How do I get from Bali or the Gilis to Senaru?

Fast boats run from Padang Bai via the Gilis to Bangsal in 2 to 2.5 hours, several in the morning (Ferryhopper, guide value USD 40–60); flights Denpasar–Lombok take 45 minutes and land at Praya in the south. Bangsal to Senaru is about an hour and a half, the airport almost three. 15 packages pick up – at Bangsal harbour, in Senggigi, Kuta or at the airport. With the others you go by private car (operator listings USD 125–150 per vehicle from Kuta or Senggigi) or bemo. HaLoMi and Syam take you straight to Gili Trawangan by boat after the trek.

How hard is the summit really?

Summit day starts at two in the morning after four hours of sleep: 1,090 metres of ascent in three to four hours over ash and scree, the last hour two steps up, one back, on a narrow ridge with exposure. Then two hours down, breakfast – and on the three-day treks the same day continues 600 metres down to the lake and 600 back up. The forestry ministry rates Rinjani Grade IV, recommends experience on Grade II and III (such as Merapi or Gede) and a health check the day before; some operators (Rinjani Hero, Rinjani Excellent) list the check. Anyone who does not know long days in thin air takes the crater rim or the four-day trek.

What about earthquakes and the volcano?

On 29 July 2018, after a magnitude 6.4 quake, more than 500 trekkers were stuck on the mountain because landslides blocked the trails; 16 people died on Lombok, including an Indonesian student on Rinjani (CNN, Wikipedia). The park stayed closed for months afterwards. Barujari in the lake last erupted in 2016. Neither is a reason not to go, but both are a reason for travel insurance with mountain rescue – and not to treat the park's mandatory insurance product, in force since October 2025, as a substitute.

When is the park closed?

Regularly in the rainy season: in 2026 from 1 January to 31 March (park office, announcement of 22 December 2025). On top come closures for fire risk in the dry season – in 2026 limited opening since 1 September, Torean closed since 23 and Senaru since 26 September – and for volcanic activity. Best months: April to June and September to November, dry and less crowded than July and August. Details on the itinerary page.
