View from the summit of Rinjani (3,726 m) at sunrise over the crater lake Segara Anak and Barujari

Mount Rinjani · Route and itinerary

The route: two crater rims, a summit at six in the morning and a lake in between – Senaru, Sembalun and the 2-, 3- and 4-day versions

Rinjani has two doors and a courtyard. The doors are the villages of Senaru in the north (601 m) and Sembalun Lawang in the east (1,156 m), each with a trail to the crater rim – Plawangan Senaru at 2,641, Plawangan Sembalun at 2,639 metres. The courtyard is the caldera with the lake Segara Anak, the cone Barujari and the hot springs, 600 metres below the rims. The summit sits above the Sembalun rim and can only be reached from there. From these parts every operator builds the same versions: two days up and down Senaru, two days Sembalun with summit, three days Sembalun – summit – lake – Senaru, four days with a night at the lake. This page walks the route in eight sections, sets four itineraries side by side and explains how to get from Bali or the Gilis to Senaru and when the park is open.

Senaru or Sembalun: why the door decides the route

The two ascents could not be more different. Senaru starts at the Rinjani Trekking Centre at the end of the village, leads half an hour through coffee gardens and then for hours through rainforest – shady, humid, with black langurs if you are lucky (Rinjani Hero, Cakrawala). Up to post 3 at around 2,000 metres you hardly notice the altitude; then the slope opens and the last 600 metres to Plawangan Senaru are steep grass. 2,000 metres of ascent in one day in total – Lombok Volcano Trekking gives the figure, HaLoMi allows eight hours including lunch. The reward is the campsite: it faces the summit across the caldera, you see lake, Barujari and the summit pyramid from the tent door and Agung on Bali in the evening. What Senaru cannot do: the summit. The ridge to it starts on the other rim.

Sembalun starts 550 metres higher and is the summit route. The first three posts are flat: grazing land, savanna, no trees – Rinjani Trekking Center speaks of cattle pasture, Chafidwahyu's photos on Commons show the yellow grassland near post 1. Sun protection and water count for more here than fitness. After post 3 come the 'Bukit Penyesalan', the hills of regret: seven steep humps up to Plawangan Sembalun at 2,639 metres; Rinjani Hero allows three hours for this stretch, Go Backpacker eight for the whole day. The campsite is the busiest on the mountain (quota 150 a day, park office), a row of tents on the edge above the lake – and at two in the morning the start point for the summit.

The versions follow from this. If you only want the view, go up and down Senaru (2 days). If you only want the summit, go up and down Sembalun (2 days, no lake). If you want everything, go up Sembalun, on day two to the summit and down to the lake, in the afternoon up to the Senaru rim and on day three out through the forest (3 days). Samalas reverses the direction – Senaru and lake first, the summit and the descent to Sembalun last – and so has the summit on the third morning instead of the second. In autumn 2026 the choice is temporarily no choice: the Senaru route has been closed since 26 September because of the forest fire, all packages run via Sembalun (park office).

The trail in eight sections

Heights per operator figures (Senaru 601, Sembalun Lawang 1,156, Plawangan Sembalun 2,639, Plawangan Senaru 2,641, summit 3,726, lake 2,000 to 2,008 m) and Wikipedia; walking times from the itineraries of Rinjani Trekking Center, Go2Rinjani, Rinjani Hero, HaLoMi and Go Backpacker. Under each section: which products differ there.

Rinjani over Lombok seen from Gili Meno – boats, with Bangsal on the shore opposite
Approach · Bali / Gili / Flughafen → Senaru · Boot 2–2,5 h · Fahrt 2–3 h

From the Gilis you see the mountain every morning; from Bangsal harbour it is another hour and a half to Senaru.

All routes start in one of two villages on the north slope: Senaru (601 m) on the road from Bangsal, Sembalun Lawang (1,156 m) on the east side. Coming from Bali, take the fast boat Padang Bai – Gili – Bangsal (2 to 2.5 hours, several morning departures) or fly to Praya in the south (45 minutes from Denpasar), then drive 2.5 to 3 hours. 14 of the 36 packages pick up anywhere in Lombok – HaLoMi, Team Backpacker, Go Backpacker, L.A Rinjani, Rinjani Trekking Center, Em Adventure, Rinjani Excellent, Dewa, Go2Rinjani –, the others meet at the office in Senaru or pick up only there. Most complete packages start the day before: pickup, Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls, night in Senaru.

Two thousand metres of climbing in one go: coffee gardens first, then rainforest to post 3, then steep grass to the edge.

The trail from the Rinjani Trekking Centre in Senaru (start 7 to 8 am) climbs through forest to post 3 (≈ 2,000 m), then over open slopes to Plawangan Senaru at 2,641 metres. Lombok Volcano Trekking quotes 2,000 metres of ascent, HaLoMi 8 hours including lunch, Rinjani Hero 7 hours. The advantage of this side: shade until early afternoon and a direct view of lake, Barujari and summit from the campsite. The disadvantage: the summit cannot be reached from here – to climb it you must go via Sembalun. Since 26 September 2026 the Senaru route is closed because of the forest fire in the Torean area; the park office reroutes bookings to Sembalun.

Tents sit on the edge; the lake below, the summit opposite, Agung on Bali to the west.

The campsite on the Senaru rim is the goal of all two-day packages and the last night of the three-day treks. What differs is in the inclusions: toilet tent with almost all, chair and table only in private or deluxe options (Lombok Trekking Info excludes them in group options, Team Backpacker in budget), mats from 4 (Rinjani Trek Adventure) to 7 cm (Syam private), pillows with most. At night the temperature drops to near zero; sleeping bag is everywhere, a warm jacket only with Dhyns (summit). Since 2026 pack-in-pack-out applies on the mountain: waste is declared on entry and checked on exit.

Hours of shadeless savanna first, then the 'hills of regret' – and by afternoon you stand on the second crater rim.

All summit packages start in Sembalun Lawang (1,156 m), where the Rinjani Information Centre registers trekkers and, since 2026, checks the health card and the QR code of the trekking pass (Rinjani Trekking Center). To post 3 the trail is flat through grazing land; then come the steep steps of Bukit Penyesalan up to Plawangan Sembalun at 2,639 metres. Go Backpacker and Rinjani Trekking Center allow eight hours, Rinjani Hero three hours from post 3. Sun protection and water are the issue here – Team Backpacker and Em Adventure hand out bottled water on day one only in budget, spring water after. Anyone choosing Senaru (two days) never sees this section.

Go2Rinjani describes the evening precisely: arrival around 4 pm, sunset over the lake, dinner until 7, wake-up at 2 am with tea and toast. This is the most-used campsite on the mountain – the quota of 150 trekkers a day for Sembalun (park office) shows up here as a row of tents on the edge. Those booking two summit days (Lombok Trekking Info, Dhyns, Em Adventure, HaLoMi, Rinjani Excellent) climb on the second morning and descend the same way to Sembalun; three-day treks go from the summit down to the lake.

Three hours of scree and ash in the dark, the last metres two steps up, one back – then the sun rises over Sumbawa.

Start between 2 and 3 am, arrival for sunrise at six; Rinjani Trekking Center allows 3 to 3.5 hours, Go2Rinjani 3, Cakrawala 4. The ridge is narrow and the last hour is loose volcanic scree. A Brazilian hiker died here in June 2025 after falling from the trail; since January 2026 the forestry ministry requires one guide per four trekkers, since October 2025 mandatory insurance with helicopter rescue. You stay 30 to 45 minutes on top; the view covers Lombok, Agung on Bali and Sumbawa. Back in camp there is breakfast, then the three-day treks descend into the caldera.

From the Sembalun rim the trail drops 600 metres in two to two and a half hours to Segara Anak (Rinjani Hero: 2,008 m). On the shore the porters cook lunch; a few minutes further are the Aik Kalak hot springs. Go2Rinjani plans four to five hours at the lake (10:30 to 15:30), Rinjani Trekking Center departure at 2 pm. Barujari, the cone in the lake, last erupted in 2016 (Wikipedia). The climb back up to the Senaru rim takes two to three hours and is the grinding part of day two on all three-day treks; only HaLoMi (4 days) sleeps at the lake and climbs in the morning.

Arrival in the early afternoon – HaLoMi says 1 pm for the two-day trek, 11 am to noon for the four-day. Then what matters is what the package says: Cakrawala and Dhyns drive to Senggigi, Mataram or Bangsal, HaLoMi and Syam take you across to Gili Trawangan on request, Go Backpacker and L.A Rinjani in the shared group only to Bangsal, Senggigi, Mataram. Trekkers on the summit of Rinjani at sunrise

Times: why the day starts at two and the trek the day before

Two clock times shape Rinjani. The first is the start in Senaru or Sembalun between seven and eight (Rinjani Hero 7:00 to 7:30, Lombok Trekking Info pickup 7:00 and start 8:30, Lombok Trekking by Idien 7:30 to 8:00). It forces a night in the village beforehand or a pickup in the middle of the night – Rinjani Trekking Center leaves Kuta at four, Mataram and Senggigi at five, Bangsal at half past five, to be in Senaru at 7:15. Anyone arriving by boat reaches Bangsal at noon at the earliest and misses the start; that is why HaLoMi, Team Backpacker, Go Backpacker, L.A Rinjani, Rinjani Excellent, Em Adventure, Dewa and Go2Rinjani sell the arrival day with a hotel night, and why HaLoMi asks you to be in Senaru at least an hour before sunset if you still want to see the waterfalls.

The second is the summit start. Go2Rinjani describes the evening on the Sembalun rim: arrival 4 pm, sunset, dinner until 7, sleep, wake-up at 2 am with tea and toast, departure at 3, summit at 6, 30 to 45 minutes on top. Cakrawala allows four hours and names six as the arrival, Rinjani Trekking Center 'ready at 2 am' and 3 to 3.5 hours. The reason for the night is not only the sunrise: clouds build in the morning, and the scree of the summit ridge is firmer frozen than thawed. After the summit comes, on the three-day treks, the longest day of the route: two hours back to camp, breakfast, two to two and a half hours down to the lake, lunch and hot springs until about 2 pm, then two to three hours back up to the Senaru rim – Go2Rinjani names 4 pm as the arrival, a good 14 hours after wake-up. HaLoMi's four-day trek moves the climb back to the next morning.

The last day is the same for all: breakfast, descent to Senaru in five to six hours, lunch on the way, arrival between 11 am (HaLoMi 4 days) and 1 to 2 pm. Then the package decides whether a car is waiting: Cakrawala drives to Senggigi, Mataram or Bangsal, HaLoMi and Syam to the boat for Gili Trawangan, Jou and Rinjani Trek Adventure not at all.

Getting there: from Bali, the Gilis and the airport to Senaru

Lombok has two entrances. From Bali, fast boats run from Padang Bai (also Serangan and Sanur) via Gili Trawangan and Gili Air to Bangsal on the north-west coast; Ferryhopper gives 1 hour 50 to 2 hours 30 and several departures between 9 am and 1 pm, operators include BlueWater Express, Gili Gili and Semaya One (guide value USD 40 to 60 each way, depending on operator and season). From Bangsal it is about an hour and a half by road to Senaru, 45 minutes more to Sembalun. Anyone holidaying on the Gilis sees the mountain every morning and only needs the public boat to Bangsal (15 minutes) – which is why HaLoMi and Syam offer the boat back to the islands after the trek, and why most complete packages pick up 'at any harbour': Bangsal, Teluk Nare, Teluk Kode, Kayangan (ferry to Sumbawa) and Lembar (car ferry from Bali, 4 to 5 hours).

Lombok airport (Praya, LOP) is in the south; Denpasar–Lombok takes 45 minutes (Wings Air, TransNusa), Jakarta–Lombok around two hours with six airlines (FlightsFrom, September 2026). From the airport to Senaru is almost three hours, from Kuta Lombok about the same – Rinjani Trekking Center picks up in Kuta at four in the morning, Em Adventure, Rinjani Excellent and Lombok Trekking Info (private) expressly name the airport as a pickup point. Anyone arriving without pickup pays, per operator listings on Viator, USD 125 to 150 per vehicle for a private car from Kuta or Senggigi to Senaru; public bemos run via Bayan but need changes and a whole day. In Senaru itself most operators' offices line the single village street, as do the lodgings (Pondok Guru Bakti, Villa Bambu, Waroeng Senaru are named by Lombok Trekking Info and Samalas) and the turn-off to the Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls that almost all complete packages visit on arrival day.

November – DecemberRain increases, afternoon storms, muddy trailsOpen until 31 December; last check-in 2025 on 31 Dec, check-out by 3 JanOnly with weather margin; crater rim rather than summit

The winter closure from January to March has been the rule in recent years (2026: announcement PG.8/T.39/TU/KSA.04.01/B/12/2025 of 22 Dec 2025). Dates for 2027 are usually announced by the park in December – check rinjaninationalpark.id before booking. Temperatures are operator figures (Team Backpacker: 'minus temperatures' at the summit).

Closures 2026: fire prevention, Torean, Senaru

The 2026 season began as planned on 1 April (booking from 6 March through eRinjani, park office) and ran normally into the summer – in May an injured Malaysian was flown off the Plawangan by helicopter, according to the park through the premium insurance bought with the ticket (ANTARA). At the end of August the forestry ministry issued a circular on fire prevention because of the extended dry season (SE.4/KSDAE/SKSDAE/KSA.02.02/08/2026); from 1 September the park was open only on a 'limited' basis, with bag checks for lighters and stoves, more patrols and online booking suspended – bookings already paid stayed valid. On 11 September the park equipped guides and porters with fire extinguishers. On the evening of 22 September a fire broke out at Bukit Setampol in the Torean area which, according to the press, had covered around 590 hectares by 26 September; the Torean route was closed on 23 September, the Senaru route on 26 September because the fire was heading for Plawangan Senaru (announcement PG.7/T.39/TU/KSA.04.01/B/09/2026, Budhy Kurniawan). Sembalun stayed open; Senaru bookings can be rescheduled or routed in and out via Sembalun.

What this means for the packages: the two-day treks to the Senaru rim (16 of the 36 products) cannot currently run in this form; the three-day treks normally finish via Senaru and must return via Sembalun; the two-day summit treks from Sembalun run. We have not blocked the products because operators reroute and the park reviews the closure daily – but anyone booking for October 2026 should take a cancellable package (17 of the 36) and ask in writing before paying which route will be walked. This page reflects the position on 27 September 2026; the park's announcements are at rinjaninationalpark.id.

Questions about the route

Can I reach the summit from the Senaru crater rim?

No. The summit ridge starts at Plawangan Sembalun on the other side of the caldera. From the Senaru rim you would first have to descend 600 metres to the lake and climb back up on the far side – that is day three of the three-day treks in reverse (Samalas goes this way). All two-day summit packages therefore start in Sembalun.

How long is summit day on the three-day trek really?

Wake-up at 2, summit at 6, back in camp at 8, breakfast, descent to the lake by about 10:30 to 11, lunch and hot springs, departure at 2 pm, Senaru rim at 4 to 5 pm (Go2Rinjani, Rinjani Trekking Center). Around 14 hours with 1,090 metres up, 1,700 down and 640 up again. If you do not want that, take HaLoMi's four-day trek with a night at the lake or the two-day summit trek that returns to Sembalun.

How much do I carry myself?

The day pack with water, jacket, headlamp, camera – porters carry tent, kitchen and food. If you want to hand over your own pack, book an extra porter (Green Rinjani USD 22, Rinjani Hero 25 a day; Rinjani Trekking Center: 'you carry your personal belongings'). Big luggage stays at the operator's office in Senaru (Lombok Trekking Info, Jou, Dhyns, Dewa list storage). Under the forestry ministry's new rules one porter carries for at most two foreign guests (CNA, August 2025).

Is there water on the mountain?

There are springs at the posts on the Sembalun route and at the lake; operators carry bottled water up – three litres per person per day with Lombok Volcano Trekking, Lombok Trekking Info, Dhyns, Dewa, Syam, HaLoMi (4 days), two litres in Dhyns' shared groups, on day one only with Team Backpacker (budget) and Em Adventure, spring water after. Since 2026 pack-in-pack-out applies on the mountain: waste is declared on entry and checked on exit; single-use bottles are unwelcome – your own bottle with a filter or tablets saves weight and trouble.

Torean – what kind of route is that?

The third way into the caldera, from the north straight to the lake without crossing a crater rim; quota 100 a day. Rinjani Hero names it as an alternative descent if the Senaru rim cannot be reached on day two. No reviewed Viator product walks it regularly, and since 23 September 2026 it has been closed because of the Bukit Setampol fire.
