Who Kilimanjaro suits
Kilimanjaro requires no climbing experience, but six to eight days of walking at high altitude and a summit night that starts at midnight and lasts twelve to fifteen hours. Regular mountain walkers who can handle tent nights at minus ten have a good chance; the success rate depends less on fitness than on the number of days: eight days on Lemosho get more people to the summit than five on Marangu. All operators require “moderate fitness” – an understatement for the summit night.
It is also the trek where comparing is worth the most money. A package consists of park fees (about a third of the price), the crew (guide, assistants, cook, three to four porters per guest), equipment, transfers and hotel. What of that appears in the list differs so much between the nine products that a 1,000-dollar offer can end up more expensive than one for 2,300.
First things first: the park fees
The national park charges a conservation fee per person per day, plus camping or hut fees per night, a rescue fee and 18 percent tax – together around USD 800 to 1,100 for six to eight days, depending on the route. That is the largest single item and the one that explains the price range: Kilinge Adventures lists USD 1,000 and expressly excludes “national park fee and tax” – you pay those at the gate yourself. That puts the package at around 2,000 dollars, close to Nafika, which includes everything.
Five products expressly list the fees as included (Habari, Nafika, Chief's, African Trek, ZARA Marangu). Three say nothing: ZARA Lemosho, Climb Kili and ZAFS – at prices above 2,300 dollars they are almost certainly in, but we only show what the data says. Asking by message before booking costs nothing.
Three recommendations for three travel situations
