One day on foot, one morning on site: what the two days mean
Of the two days only one is a hiking day. Day 1 is long – pickup at four, train at six or seven, six to seven hours on foot, arrival at the hotel around 6 pm –, day 2 is a Machu Picchu visit like every day trip from Cusco has, except that you already sleep in town and are up on one of the first buses at 5:30 am. That is why 16 of the 18 packages are built the same way and differ in hotel class, train, bus rides and meals, not in the route. The two exceptions are the one-day versions from TreXperience and Kenko, which put the visit on the afternoon of day one and return in the evening.
What the short trail shares with the long one: the arrival on foot through the Sun Gate, the terraces of Wiñay Wayna, the paved Inca path, the cloud forest with orchids and a waterfall. What it lacks: the passes, the ruins of Runkurakay, Sayacmarca and Phuyupatamarca, the tent nights with cook and porters – and the morning at the Sun Gate. The short trail stands there in the afternoon. What that means in comparison is under 2 or 4 days.
The path in eight sections
Approach, checkpoint, climb, Sun Gate, descent, night, second morning, return. Altitudes per Inkayni (the only operator with figures throughout: Cusco 3,399, Ollantaytambo 2,792, Km 104 2,100, Wiñay Wayna 2,650, Inti Punku 2,720, Machu Picchu 2,430, Aguas Calientes 2,040 m) and Machu Picchu Peru Tours (Chachabamba 2,250). Under each section, which operator includes what there.
Off at four in Cusco, onto the train at Ollantaytambo, and the train stops where nobody else gets off: at kilometre 104.
All packages begin with pickup in Cusco between 4:00 and 4:30 am (Alpaca, TreXperience, Salkantay Trekking, Qoricancha, Peruvian Guiding Tours also collect guests in the Sacred Valley at 5:30) and an hour and a half's drive to Ollantaytambo. There you board the train to Aguas Calientes – Expedition with most, Inca Rail Voyager with Ali Peru – and ride a good hour along the Urubamba. Km 104 is not a station but a request stop on the line; the operators register their groups. Machu Picchu Peru Tours gives the times: train 6:40 to 7:40 am, start of the hike at eight. Booking with Valencia means two and a half hours on the train per the itinerary, presumably from Poroy.
Across the suspension bridge to the other side of the Urubamba, show your passport, and the first Inca site lies just past the checkpoint.
From the stop at Km 104 a suspension bridge crosses the Urubamba to the route 5 checkpoint, where your passport is matched against the permit – the same original used to book (Peruvian Guiding Tours, Qoricancha and TreXperience say so explicitly). Beyond it lies Chachabamba at about 2,170 to 2,250 m (Inkayni gives 2,100 for the train stop, Machu Picchu Peru Tours 2,250 for the ruin): a small complex with water channels and terraces that operators read as a guard post or religious centre before Machu Picchu. Here Salkantay Trekking and Chullos hand out the box lunches, TreXperience serves a picnic breakfast. From here on it is all uphill.
Three to four hours of cloud forest in switchbacks, a waterfall, orchids – and then the terraces of Wiñay Wayna, where the classic trail spends its last night.
The climb is the real hiking day: about 500 m of ascent on a paved, in places steep Inca path through cloud forest, with a waterfall halfway up that Inkayni, Quechuas and Alpaca mention. Operators quote three hours (Alpaca, Chullos, Quechuas, Ali Peru), three and a half or four (TreXperience, Valencia, Peruvian Guiding). Wiñay Wayna, 'forever young', named after an orchid, lies at 2,650 to 2,680 m (Quechuas writes 2,900, which does not fit): terraces curving along the slope, an upper and a lower group of buildings, a stairway of fountains between them. This is where lunch happens – a chef's picnic with Alpaca, TreXperience, AB Expeditions (with tent, table and chairs) and Qoricancha, a box lunch with Salkantay Trekking, Chullos and Peruvian Guiding. On the campsite next door the four-day groups sleep their last night; on the short trail you see them at lunch.
The path turns level and narrow, high above the river, up to the last steep steps – and then Machu Picchu lies below you, with almost nobody beside you.
From Wiñay Wayna the short trail follows the classic one: an hour and a half to two hours on an almost level path along the slope, finally the famous steep steps to Inti Punku, the Sun Gate at 2,720 m (sign on site; Valencia writes 2,730). Action Peru reckons on arriving around 4 pm, TreXperience 1 day as early as 2. That is the difference from the four-day trek, which stands here at seven in the morning: in the afternoon the gate is empty, the light is low, and the day visitors below are already heading for the buses. Salkantay Trekking speaks of 'sunset scenery', Chullos of 'almost to yourself' – with the site closing at 5:30 pm that leaves a scant hour, no more.

From the Sun Gate it is about 45 minutes to an hour down into the site. What happens next is where the packages differ: TreXperience walks circuit 1, the upper path with the viewpoints, on the first afternoon and returns in the morning; Alpaca plans half an hour on site; Valencia turns off before the site onto a side path to Aguas Calientes and saves the visit for the morning; most others take the Guard House photo and the bus. The bus to Aguas Calientes (25 minutes, hairpins) is included in 13 packages, expressly excluded for day one by Salkantay Trekking and Chullos and paid on site – Action Peru and Peruvian Guiding quote USD 24 for the round trip on day two as a yardstick. Without a bus ride you take the steps: about an hour and a half down.
The town on the river where every road to Machu Picchu ends: hotel, dinner, early to bed – or, with three packages, find the hotel yourself.
Aguas Calientes, officially Machupicchu Pueblo, lies at 2,040 m in the Urubamba gorge, reachable only by train, with a station, bus terminal, market, hot springs (10 soles per Machu Picchu Peru Tours) and hotels of every class. 14 of the 18 two-day packages shown include the night: Alpaca a four-star house, TreXperience, AB Expeditions (Tara Machu Picchu), Inkayni (Golden Sunrise), Qoricancha (Tierra Viva, private room), Machu Picchu Tours, Ali Peru and Valencia three stars, Salkantay Trekking, Quechuas, Andean Path and Machu Picchu Peru Tours without a class, Happy Gringo names the hotel The Presidente only in the itinerary. Action Peru and Peruvian Guiding exclude the hotel – you book it yourself – as do the two blocked products. Dinner is included in twelve packages; Peruvian Guiding quotes USD 23 for it. Valencia charges a USD 52 single supplement and offers extra nights in better hotels for USD 100 to 150 – the only hotel prices in the data.
Up on one of the first buses, two to three hours of guided tour on route 3-B, then time to yourself – or, with a separate ticket, for one of the mountains.
Day two is the Machu Picchu visit every tour has, only earlier: breakfast at five, bus at 5:30 (AB Expeditions, Valencia, Peruvian Guiding give the time), passport and ticket again at the gate. Arriving via the Red de Caminos Inka you enter the site since 2026, per the Ministry of Culture, via route 3-B; Qoricancha writes it that way, AB Expeditions and Salkantay Trekking list circuits 1 and 3 (1C and 3B), TreXperience circuit 1 the day before. The guided tour lasts two hours (Alpaca, AB Expeditions, Machu Picchu Tours), two and a half (Qoricancha, Kenko) or three (Ali Peru); then free time until the bus. The mountains – Huayna Picchu, Machu Picchu Mountain, Huchuy Picchu – need their own timed ticket: only Salkantay Trekking sells it as an option (810 to 830 instead of USD 730), Alpaca quotes 75, AB Expeditions and Valencia 65 USD as a surcharge, all others exclude it or say nothing. Valencia notes that the seven o'clock Huayna Picchu slot clashes with the guided tour.
Lunch in town, then the train to Ollantaytambo – Expedition or Vistadome, one of the few items that explain the prices – and the van to Cusco.
After the guided tour it is the bus down (with Action Peru and Peruvian Guiding again at your own expense), lunch in Aguas Calientes (excluded by almost all; AB Expeditions and Chullos include it), then the train. The class is the most visible difference: Vistadome with panoramic windows with TreXperience and Alpaca (through January 2027; Expedition from March 2027), 'panoramic train' with Salkantay Trekking, Vistadome also on Kenko's day trip; Expedition with AB Expeditions, Qoricancha, Machu Picchu Tours, Quechuas, Action Peru, Peruvian Guiding, Valencia and TreXperience 1 day; not stated by Inkayni, Happy Gringo, Andean Path, Machu Picchu Peru Tours, and with Ali Peru the return train is missing from the list altogether. Departures range from 2:30 pm (Machu Picchu Peru Tours) to 6:20 pm (TreXperience 1 day); Valencia says openly that the time depends on PeruRail's allocation. The driver waits at Ollantaytambo, arrival in Cusco between 7:30 and 9:30 pm.
