Costs: why USD 750 can end up dearer than 1,081

On the Manaslu there are two kinds of price: the one for the package and the one for the trek. Trek Mania sells 13 days for USD 750 – guide, permits, bus – and everything else you pay at the teahouse, day by day, in rupees. Magical Nepal sells 13 days for 1,081 with all meals but without porter and hotel. Heaven Himalaya sells 14 days for 1,800 and leaves the exclusion list empty. All three land between USD 1,800 and 2,200 once you add visa, insurance, tips and extras. Here are the list prices of all 32 packages, the items that are missing, and four bills through to the airport.

What is missing from the lists – and what it costs

Porter. 15 packages exclude him or do not mention him. The rate: USD 20 to 25 a day for a porter carrying 20 to 25 kg for two guests (Outfitter Nepal, Manaslu Expert), or USD 240 flat for the trek (Everest Trekking Routes). For two people that is 120 to 150 each – plus his tip. Without a porter you carry 10 to 14 kg yourself, which works in the gorge and is not pleasant on the pass day. Meals. Five packages leave them out, Adventure Master leaves out lunch. A teahouse day in the Manaslu region in 2026 costs USD 30 to 45 for three meals plus 5 to 10 for the room, more above Samagaon because everything arrives by mule: dal bhat USD 6 to 8, tea 1 to 2, a litre of boiled water 1 to 3. Twelve days: USD 450 to 650. Hotel in Kathmandu. 18 packages have none. Thamel: USD 25 to 40 for a clean double with breakfast, 60 to 100 for the three-star hotel the packages mean. You need three nights (arrival, permit day, return). Visa. USD 30 for 15 days, 50 for 30, on arrival at the airport with a photo; Sole Encounters and Himalayan Scenery name it explicitly. Insurance. With helicopter rescue to 5,500 m, USD 70 to 140 for two weeks; a flight from Samdo or Bimthang costs USD 3,000 to 5,000, and the operator arranges it only against a policy. Tips. No operator names amounts, all expect them: usual are USD 10 to 15 a day for the guide and 5 to 8 per porter, shared by the group – for two people with a guide and one porter USD 180 to 260, 90 to 130 each. Teahouse extras. Hot shower USD 3 to 8 (Himalayan Leisure quotes 5 to 8), charging 2 to 5, Wi-Fi 3 to 5 where available, a Snickers 2 to 3: USD 80 to 150 over twelve days. Gear. Sleeping bag to minus ten and down jacket for rent in Thamel at USD 1 to 2 a day per item if the package does not provide them (12 do). Crampons or spikes for the descent from the pass: USD 10 to 20 rental, mentioned by no package.

Four bills: through to the airport

Four packages worked through, per person for two, from arrival in Kathmandu to departure, without international flights. A question mark means: the item is not in the inclusion list and is a guide value.

Where you save and where you do not

Booking for two saves 10 to 25 percent with eleven products and half the porter. The public bus instead of the jeep saves USD 150 to 300 in the package price and costs two hours and comfort – on the track from Arughat the jeep is not more comfortable, only faster. Leaving out the porter saves USD 120 to 150 per person and is feasible for the practised with a twelve-kilo pack. Booking the hotel yourself saves USD 30 to 60 a night against the package. What you should not save on is the second rest day (it costs a day of full board, around USD 60, and prevents the most expensive breakdown: abandoning before the pass), the insurance (no policy, no helicopter) and the season: the RAP costs USD 25 less from December to August, but the pass is often closed in winter and the road in the monsoon.

Questions about costs

What does the Manaslu Circuit cost in total?

Per person for two around USD 1,550 to 2,200 from Kathmandu to Kathmandu, depending on the package – without international flights. The list price (USD 750 to 1,800) is 55 to 80 percent of it; visa, insurance, tips, extras and the missing items (porter, hotel, with frame packages the meals) make up the rest.

Is the frame package without meals worth it?

Not as a saving: Trek Mania at USD 750 plus 450 to 650 for meals and 240 for the porter lands at 1,450 to 1,650 – as much as Magical Nepal with full board plus porter. It is worth it for people who want to decide themselves what and where they eat, and who may already own part of the gear.

How much cash do I take?

For twelve days without full board USD 600 to 800 in rupees, with full board 250 to 350 (extras, tips, emergency reserve). The last ATM is in Kathmandu or Besisahar; on the trek there is none, and nobody takes cards.

Why is Manaslu dearer than Annapurna?

The Restricted Area Permit (USD 100 to 145 instead of 0), the guide requirement through an agency, the longer approach on a dirt track and the supply from Samagaon upwards by mule. In return there is no road on the trek, no jeep shortcut and a third of the people.
