Seven, eight or twelve days: what the number means
The days in the titles count from Kathmandu, usually to the return to Kathmandu. Seven days is the minimum: a travel day out, five days on foot, a travel day back – and then only the morning of the descent day is left for the summit (Nepal Lion, Nomad Mountain Club, Himalayas On Foot) or there is no summit at all (Nepal High Trek, Himalayan Recreation, Treklanders). Cordial fits the summit into seven days only by walking Lama Hotel–Kyanjin in one day. Eight days is the standard with a summit day and two nights at Kyanjin: Magical Nepal, Tours and Treks, Mosaic, Outshine, Base Camp Adventure, Bold, Trek & Adventure, Namaste Nepal. Nine to twelve days mean not more trek but more Kathmandu: arrival and departure day, one to four hotel nights, with Ace, Alpine Club, Overland, Hit The Himalaya, Travel Maker, Adventure World Club and Mountain Mart a city tour. Wonder Himalaya uses nine days for two summits. 13 days with Trek Mania and 16 with Peregrine mean Gosaikunda.
The stages
Eight sections: the approach, the gorge, the open valley, Kyanjin, the summit day, the descent, the return and the extension. Altitudes per Tours and Treks Nepal, Alpine Club of Himalaya and Peregrine, rounded; under each section is which packages walk it that way.
A day on the bus or in a jeep: the Pasang Lhamu highway up the Trishuli valley to Dhunche, the district town of Rasuwa and seat of the park headquarters, then down to Syabrubesi.
All packages start with this drive: 122 kilometres, seven to nine hours by bus, six to seven by jeep. The public bus leaves between 6:30 and 8:30 am from Machhapokhari by the New Bus Park; the road is paved to Dhunche, with a landslide section near Ramche, then track. At Dhunche the army checks the national park permit. Nepal High Trek, Himalayan Social Journey, Glorious Himalaya and Bold Himalaya use a shared jeep, Himalayan Recreation, Alpine Club of Himalaya and Mountain Tiger a private one, Mountain Mart a Land Cruiser; the majority take the public bus. Syabrubesi at 1,460 m is a roadside settlement at the confluence of the Bhote Kosi and Langtang Khola with lodges, hot springs and the turn-off to the Tamang Heritage Trail.
The first walking day follows the Langtang Khola through the gorge: suspension bridges, bamboo, oaks and rhododendrons, langurs in the forest, and at the end the lodges of Lama Hotel in a forest clearing.
From Syabrubesi over the Bhote Kosi bridge and up the north bank of the Langtang Khola: two hours to the landslide zone near Doman, then Bamboo at 1,970 m where most stop for lunch, on to the bridge and in bends to Rimche at 2,400 and in half an hour to Lama Hotel – not a hotel but a group of lodges at 2,470 m, named after the first innkeeper. Six to seven hours, 1,010 m of ascent, the longest climb of the trek. The alternative via Sherpagaon on the ridge is longer and has better views; Namaste Nepal, Treklanders and Mountain Mart take it on the way back, Trek Mania and others not at all. At night you hear the river, by day you see beehives on the cliffs.
Out of the forest into the open valley: at Ghoda Tabela the view of Langtang Lirung opens up, then yak pastures, mani walls and the new Langtang village above the debris of 2015.
Steeply through hemlocks, maples and rhododendrons high above the river to Gumnachok and Ghoda Tabela at around 3,000 m, the “horse stable” with army and park post, where the permit is stamped and Lirung stands for the first time fully at the head of the valley. Then more gently through pastures and past chortens to Thangsyap and the place where, until 25 April 2015, the old Langtang village stood: an ice and rock avalanche from Lirung triggered by the earthquake buried it and killed more than 300 people, among them dozens of trekkers and guides. The new village stands around a hundred metres higher on the slope, with lodges, a memorial mani wall and the names of the dead in eleven languages; the residents largely rebuilt it themselves, and every night here is part of that rebuilding. Those who want to go on walk half an hour to Mundu at 3,540 m – Everest Trekking Routes, Accessible Adventure, Nepalaya and Treklanders sleep there.
The short day: through yak pastures, past the longest mani wall in the valley and over a moraine to Kyanjin Gompa, the last settlement, with monastery, cheese factory and lodges beneath the Lirung glacier.
Beyond Langtang the trail climbs over a ridge with a large chorten, follows a mani wall several hundred metres long to Mundu and Sindum, crosses the river on a wooden bridge and, over the yak pastures of Yamphu, reaches a moraine from which Kyanjin Gompa comes into view for the first time: three to four hours, 440 m of ascent, usually done before lunch. Kyanjin lies at 3,870 m in a bowl of glaciers – Lirung to the north, Langshisha to the east, Ganchenpo to the south –, has two dozen lodges with bakeries and Wi-Fi, a small monastery rebuilt after 2015, and the cheese factory founded in 1955 with Swiss help that sells yak cheese. The afternoon is for acclimatisation: to the glacier snout, to the viewpoint above the village or simply into the sun. All packages sleep here at least one night; those with a summit day stay two.
Two viewpoints to choose from: Kyanjin Ri directly behind the village in three to four hours, Tserko Ri as a day tour with a thousand metres of ascent – both with views of Lirung, Langshisha Ri, Dorje Lakpa, Yala Peak and the border peaks towards Tibet.
Kyanjin Ri (4,773 m, operators quote 4,700 to 4,800) starts at the edge of the village: one and a half to two hours steeply over grass slopes to the lower summit with the flags, another to the upper one, then the same way back – doable before breakfast, with sunrise over Lirung. Tserko Ri (4,984 m, operators quote 4,985 to 5,150) is the serious day: over the pastures towards Langshisha, left at a cairn into a side valley, past the herders' huts of Yala Kharka and in bends up to the conical summit, seven to nine hours return, with a packed lunch. From the top you see the whole valley to the snout of the Langtang glacier and Shishapangma on the Tibetan side. 17 packages fix Tserko Ri, seven Kyanjin Ri, six leave the choice, Wonder Himalaya does both on two days; seven packages have no summit day. After the summit you sleep in Kyanjin again – except with Nepal Lion, Nomad Mountain Club, Himalayas On Foot and Wonder Himalaya, which descend the same day.
Two days back down the same way: the long day to Lama Hotel through Langtang and Ghoda Tabela, the shorter one through the gorge to Syabrubesi – or via Sherpagaon on the ridge.
From Kyanjin to Lama Hotel it is 1,400 m of descent, five to seven hours, with lunch at Ghoda Tabela; Alpine Club and Overland sleep there and split the descent differently, Wonder Himalaya goes on to Bamboo and on the last morning only two hours to Syabrubesi. The second day is short at four to five hours; those with time take the high path via Sherpagaon, a Sherpa village overlooking the Bhote Kosi valley, and arrive in Syabrubesi from above – Namaste Nepal, Treklanders and Mountain Mart offer it. The night in Syabrubesi is warm, with hot springs by the river, and the last one in the package for almost all.
The same way back: bus at seven, arrival in Kathmandu in the afternoon or evening – with the short packages everything ends here, with the long ones a hotel night and the farewell follow.
Six to nine hours depending on vehicle and traffic on the edge of the city; the public bus drops you at the New Bus Park, packages with hotel pickup take you to Thamel. If you want to fly on the same evening, do not – the road has landslides and jams, and the operators themselves write “7–8 hours” or more. The twelve- and eleven-day products (Ace, Alpine Club, Overland, Mountain Mart, Travel Maker, Adventure World Club) add a hotel night and usually a farewell dinner; the seven-day products end with the drop-off at the hotel.
Instead of driving back to Kathmandu, you can turn off from Lama Hotel to Thulo Syabru, climb to the sacred lakes of Gosaikunda and walk over the Lauribina La through Helambu to the edge of Kathmandu.
From Lama Hotel you climb to Thulo Syabru (2,230 m), a Tamang village on the ridge, then through forest to the monastery and cheese factory of Sing Gompa (3,250 m), over the pastures of Lauribina to Gosaikunda at 4,380 m – a dozen lakes, in August the goal of thousands of pilgrims for the Janai Purnima festival, otherwise quiet and often frozen. The next day over the Lauribina La (4,610 m) and a long way down to Ghopte and Tharepati, then three to four days over the ridges of Helambu – Kutumsang, Chisapani – to Sundarijal, from where the bus to Kathmandu takes an hour. Peregrine offers the whole loop in 16 days (USD 1,700 for two), Mountain Hike Nepal only the lake in six days from Dhunche; Hiking Adventure Treks and Trek Mania name Gosaikunda without an itinerary. The extension demands two nights above 4,000 m and a pass day – more demanding than the valley.

Getting there: bus, jeep and the road to Rasuwa
From Kathmandu to Syabrubesi it is around 122 kilometres and seven to nine hours by bus, six to seven by jeep: out of the city to Trishuli, up the river valley, in hairpins to Dhunche at 1,950 m and down to Syabrubesi. The road is paved to Dhunche, with a landslide section near Ramche that becomes a test of patience after rain; then track. The public bus leaves daily between 6:30 and 8:30 am from Machhapokhari by the New Bus Park, “deluxe” with 2+2 seats and no air conditioning, around NPR 1,200 to 1,500; the shared jeep from the same place costs NPR 2,000 to 2,500 per seat and takes one to two hours less; a private jeep USD 160 to 200 per way – guide values from operators, as of December 2025, not from the product data. At Dhunche the army checks the national park permit, so keep your passport handy. Twelve packages travel by jeep, the others by bus; Mountain Mart takes its guests in a Land Cruiser only as far as Dhunche and walks from there via Thulo Syabru – one more day on foot and the prettier start. The return leaves Syabrubesi at seven and ends in the afternoon or evening at the bus park; packages with pickup take you to Thamel.
