Landscape: around the mountain or into the mountain
The Circuit is a journey through climate zones. It begins in subtropical rice terraces at 800 m, climbs through forest and gorge into Tibetan-influenced Manang, crosses the pass and falls into the desert of Mustang, where the mountains are brown and the wind sweeps through the Kali Gandaki valley at noon. You see Annapurna II, III and IV, Gangapurna, Tilicho, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri – but rarely up close; the Circuit is a trek of vastness. Base Camp is the opposite: a gorge that opens into an amphitheatre where Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machapuchare stand so close you tilt your head back. A trek of closeness – and a trek that goes back the same way.
Difficulty: higher against steeper
The Circuit is higher: six nights above 3,500 m, two above 4,400, a pass at 5,416 with departure at four, wind and minus 15 degrees. The paths are mostly wide and moderately steep because they are trade routes and today roads. Base Camp is steeper: stone stairs with thousands of steps, 400 m down and up again in one day, the avalanche gorge before the amphitheatre – but only one or two nights above 3,500 m, and the highest point is 1,300 m lower. If you fear altitude, you are safer in the Sanctuary; if you fear for your knees, on the Circuit. The daily stages are similar: five to seven hours, on pass day and on the Sinuwa–ABC day eight to nine.
