Annapurna Circuit cost: why USD 590 is a guide and 2,400 is no porter

What is missing – and what it costs on the mountain

Meals: dal bhat USD 5 to 8 in the valley, 8 to 10 in Manang and Phedi; three meals with tea 25 to 35 dollars a day – CAN itself names 25. With Trek & Adventure the difference is measurable: USD 390 for 36 meals, just under 11 per meal. Porter: Outfitter USD 20 a day, Recreation 160 per porter for the tour, Bold 900 as an option (listing error, ask). Usual are 20 to 25 a day for a porter shared by two guests – for ten days 100 to 125 per person. Hotels: 3-star in Thamel or Lakeside USD 30 to 60 per night; the short packages have none, the long ones two to five. Flight Jomsom–Pokhara: around USD 130 to 150 at market rates, included with HSJ, Nepal Social and Adventure Bound Short. Permits: ACAP and TIMS together around USD 40 – guide figure, not from the product data; with Outfitter and Great Adventure not named or only as a lump sum.

Add it up and Trek & Adventure without meals costs around 950 with food – ten dollars less than the full-board option. CAN with food and half a porter around 1,000, Everest Holiday Budget with food around 900 – the Standard package at 869 is cheaper. The rule here is the sharpest of all Nepal treks: with packages under USD 800 the food is almost always missing, and the food costs more than the surcharge for full board.

On the mountain: water USD 1 to 3 per litre, hot shower 2 to 5, charging 2 to 4, Wi-Fi 3 to 6 – around USD 120 to 180 for twelve days. The talk in Manang is free, the hot springs in Tatopani cost a few hundred rupees.

The extras on the mountain: Manang is the last bank

Manang has ATMs that do not always work, bakeries, gear shops and a pharmacy; after that there is nothing until Jomsom. Everything outside the package is paid in cash in rupees, and prices rise with altitude: water costs one dollar in Chame, three in Phedi; a hot shower in Manang two, at High Camp there is none; charging two to four dollars per device, Wi-Fi three to six for a card that often does not work up high. If you treat water – Nature Explore supplies it treated – you save USD 40 to 60 over twelve days. Expect USD 10 to 20 a day and take USD 200 in reserve in rupees in case the pass stays closed for two days or the flight from Jomsom is cancelled.
