What a self-guided package really organises
A self-guided W package is a chain of reservations with a timetable. You receive vouchers and a map the day before or in the morning – Bamba and Say Hueque insist on a briefing at their office –, take the public bus at seven to the Laguna Amarga gate, register with CONAF, show the ticket and watch the video on park rules. From then on you walk: to the first refugio where the reservation is held, to dinner in the evening, to breakfast and the box lunch in the morning. Ecotours puts it precisely: “You walk each section independently with your backpack, and you are expected at each place with an equipped campsite.”
What the package includes differs in detail, and the details cost: Say Hueque and Ecotours include the park entrance, the others do not. Four packages include the catamaran, Tangol Classic calls it an “option”, Bamba names it only in the title. Three camping options provide tent, sleeping bag and mat at the site so you carry only clothes; at Tangol nothing is said about it. No package includes porters. What all have: full board in the refugios, bus from Puerto Natales, the beds in the right order.
What you do yourself: find the way (marked, but long), read the weather, reach the 6:30 pm catamaran, carry the pack. Bamba names “moderate to high” as the fitness level, Say Hueque “medium to high”, Ecotours “high”. Since 2016 cooking at the campsites is allowed only in the designated shelters; in some refugios the power is off at night from 11 pm to 7 am, and there is no mobile network or Wi-Fi in the park (Bamba).
What a guide adds – and what not
The three guided packages are three different things. Howlanders walks the W as a star: two nights at the same camp on Lago Pehoé, every morning by minibus and catamaran to the trailhead, Base Torres, French Valley, Grey lookout as day hikes with a guide and a group of up to 15, back to camp in the evening. You carry only a daypack, see all three valleys, but never sleep in the park. W Circuit Patagonia is two days: Base Torres with a guide, one night at the Pehoé camp, then the Cóndor lookout, the rock paintings on the Aonikenk trail and the Cuernos lookout – not a W, but the entry point for people with little time, and the only package with a refund up to six days before. Tusker is the guided ten-day loop for USD 8,600 with hotels and a boat trip; its inclusions list, however, names only meals, the guide appears in the description – hence with a reservation.
What a guide changes on the W: they decide in wind and snow whether you go into the French Valley or turn back; they keep the pace of a group; they explain lenga forest, guanacos, condors and the history of the estancias; in the star shape they take the pack off your shoulders because you do not need it. What they do not change: the trail, the beds, the catamaran. And they cost less than you would think – Howlanders with guide, camp, full board and catamaran is USD 1,567, below every self-guided package, because nights outside the refugios are cheaper.
