Refugio or tent: what the surcharge buys

A refugio bed is a place in a dorm – six to eight beds, bedding usually provided, hot shower, dinner at the table, breakfast, box lunch. A campsite in the package is a tent that stands at the site or is provided, with mat and sleeping bag (Bamba, Say Hueque, Ecotours), the same meals in the refugio dining room, shared shower and toilet. The difference is the night: dry and out of the wind in a bed, in a tent in the wind, which can be strong at night at Paine Grande and Grey. The surcharge: USD 200 at Tangol Express, 375 at Say Hueque, 520 at Ecotours (but only for two people), 584 at Tangol Classic, 682 at Tangol O. Bamba offers a hostel bed instead of a refugio, departing Tuesdays and Thursdays only.

What you carry matters too: if you sleep in the tent package and find tent, mat and sleeping bag at the site, you carry clothes, water and lunch – 6 to 8 kg. If at Tangol you do not know whether a tent is standing, ask before booking; your own tent and a sleeping bag for Patagonia weigh three to four kilos together. Renting in Puerto Natales costs, according to operators' websites, around USD 10 to 15 per day for the set – a guide value.

What is missing – and what it costs

Park entrance: CLP 48,500 for two or more days, around USD 50, tariff since 1 May 2026, online only through Pases Parques at least 24 hours ahead; the ticket is valid five days before and after the chosen date. Only Say Hueque and Ecotours include it. Catamaran: Pudeto–Paine Grande, 30 minutes, Hielos Patagónicos; advance sale for the season from August, price according to operators' websites around USD 40 one way – a guide value, not booked ourselves. Included at Say Hueque, Ecotours, Tangol Express (both ways), Howlanders. Bus: Puerto Natales–Laguna Amarga, two to two and a half hours, included as a public bus or in the itinerary in all self-guided packages; the way from your hotel to the terminal is not. Hotel in Puerto Natales: at least the night before the trek (bus at seven) and usually the one after (arrival 9 pm) – USD 45 to 130 per night by category, guide value. Getting there: bus Punta Arenas–Puerto Natales three hours or flight to Puerto Natales; from El Calafate bus across the border five to six hours. Included nowhere.

Insurance: No package includes one; all exclude it. Tips: With the self-guided packages there is nobody to tip; with guide and driver USD 10 to 15 per day and person is usual – guide value. In the park: drinks and snacks at the refugios, water from the streams is drinkable. VAT: Foreigners are exempt from 19 % on accommodation if passport and entry slip are shown; Bamba and Say Hueque point this out.

Booking: when, with which details, and what no longer works

The beds in the park are usually released by the concessionaires in winter for the coming season; if you want December to February, book in July to September. The packages here pass that on: eight of nine are non-refundable, three are confirmed manually – the booking is firm only once the operator has the beds. Say Hueque requires passport name, number, nationality and date of birth of all participants at booking, Bamba a briefing at its office at 6 pm the day before.

What you arrange yourself after booking: the park ticket online (by the day before the bus at the latest, with passport number), at Tangol and Bamba the catamaran (advance sale from August, otherwise at the jetty if there is room), the hotel nights in Puerto Natales, the journey there. What you take: passport and entry slip for the tax exemption, cash in pesos for drinks, the vouchers printed – there is no network in the park.
