Kilimanjaro cost: why a package costs 2,000 to 3,200 dollars – and what comes on top

The list prices: nine products, three with tiers

From the Viator Partner API availability data of 25 September 2026, price in US dollars per person. Habari, Chief's and ZAFS tier by number of travellers; ZARA Lemosho and African Trek are listed by Viator as “unit prices”, and the platform's search price equals the per-person amount.

Park fees: the item that makes up a third of the price

Kilimanjaro National Park (TANAPA) charges per person a conservation fee per day, a camping or hut fee per night, a one-off rescue fee and 18 percent VAT on everything. For seven days of Machame that adds up to around USD 900 to 1,000, a little more for eight days of Lemosho, a little less for five days of Marangu; on top come fees for the crew, which the operator carries. The exact rates are in the park's fee schedule and change; we give them as a guide value.

What that means for the comparison: Kilinge Adventures at 1,000 dollars is not a bargain but a package without the biggest item – you pay the fees at the gate yourself, cash or card, and end up at around 2,000 dollars plus hotel. Nafika at 2,100 with fees, hotel and airport is cheaper on balance. With ZARA Lemosho, Climb Kili and ZAFS the fees are not in the list; at prices above 2,300 dollars they are almost certainly included, but “almost certainly” is worth a question when 1,000 dollars are at stake.

Total bill for one person

Seven to eight days from and to Moshi, without flight and visa. Tips: USD 250 to 300 per guest for the crew, in cash on the last day – Nafika names it, KPAP recommends it, everyone expects it. Hotel in Moshi: around USD 50 to 80 per night where not included. Rental gear: sleeping bag to minus ten, down jacket, poles – around USD 60 to 100 per tour from the operators. A question mark means “not mentioned in the inclusions”.

Guide values. Without flight, visa (USD 50), insurance, vaccinations, single-room supplement. Base price plus known mandatory costs. Items marked “?” are not quantified but still real.

The crew: what the second third pays for

On Kilimanjaro every guest has three to four porters, plus cook, waiter, head guide and assistant guides – for two guests a crew of eight to ten people. They carry tents, kitchen tent, tables, chairs, toilet tent, food for a week and your duffel bag; the park limits loads to 20 kg per porter and weighs them at the gate. Crew wages, food, park fees and insurance are in the package price – ZARA Marangu lists that explicitly, most others do not. What is not in is the tips: around USD 20 per day for the head guide, 15 for assistants and cook, 10 per porter, pooled by the group and handed out on the last day. For one guest in a small group that is the 250 to 300 dollars Nafika names.

Gear: what is missing and what it costs

Tent and mat are included on all camping routes, the sleeping bag only with Nafika; ZARA Marangu and Chief's expressly exclude it. You need a bag rated to minus ten, a down jacket for the summit night, poles, headtorch, gaiters and a water bottle that does not freeze. If you do not own them, rent from the operator in Moshi or Arusha: sleeping bag USD 40 to 60, down jacket 30 to 50, poles 15 to 20 per tour. Only buy what you will use afterwards.
