Acatenango cost: why 89 dollars ends up 130 – and 379 is sometimes fair

Total bill for one person

Two days from and to Antigua, without a hotel. Entrance: 100 quetzales, about USD 14, in cash at the pay booth on the mountain. Water: three to four litres for the ascent, bought in Antigua about USD 3. Fuego: 200 quetzales, about USD 26, where offered. Tips: 50 to 100 quetzales. Entrance: 100 quetzales that three operators would rather not mention

Acatenango lies in a protected area managed by the community of La Soledad; at the pay booth above the village every person pays 100 quetzales (about USD 14), Guatemalans less. OX honestly names the amount as an exclusion, Pachamama calls it “government fees”, Brothers “Entrance to Acatenango Park”. Five products include it. Not a big item, but one you must carry in cash in quetzales – there is no ATM on the mountain.

Why 89 dollars ends up 130

Brothers Expeditions is the cheapest product at USD 89 – and the one with the shortest inclusions list: sleeping bag, mat, sweater, gloves, breakfast, tea. No entrance, no torch, no poles, no lunch or dinner in the list, no refund. Add entrance, torch, two meals and water and you land at the 130 dollars that OX or CA Travelers charge from the outset – with a cabin instead of a tent. In Antigua there are tours for 60 dollars too; the mechanism is the same. If you really want to save, save on the Fuego side trip, not on the operator.

What 379 dollars buys with Trek Guatemala

USD 379 as a pair, 259 for four per person: safari tents with cot, mattress and pillow instead of a bunk or a mat, entrance, a locker in Antigua, groups of up to 16 with four per booking, guide also in French, children from eight. Three times a standard product buys not more mountain but a night in which you sleep, and an operator that answers every question beforehand. For a couple booking Acatenango as the event of the trip that is fair; for backpackers who would not sleep anyway it is money for nothing.
