Entry: small, but outside the ticket system
Choquequirao is not part of the Machu Picchu ticket system. The fee is set by the Ministry of Culture in Cusco and collected in cash at the Marampata checkpoint – around 60 soles for foreigners, with a student discount. Salkantay Trekking expressly lists it as included; TreXperience does not list it. Keep the amount in cash until the operator confirms in writing that it is in the price.
What you need in cash along the way
After Cachora there is no ATM. In Chiquisca, Santa Rosa and Marampata families sell water, beer, cola and snacks at porter prices – a litre of water up there costs several times the Cusco price. Tips are collected on the last trek evening: USD 40 to 60 per person for cook, muleteer and guide is usual. If you need a riding animal for the climb, you pay on site, around USD 30 to 40 per day.
Questions about cost and inclusions
Why is the TreXperience 5-day product so much pricier?
The inclusions list does not explain it; the extra items named are airport transfers. Smaller groups, better gear or a more private tour are possible – none of it is documented. Ask before booking.
Is Choquequirao cheaper than the Salkantay?
Similar on the list (USD 698 to 890 versus 695 to 1,270). Priced out in full, Choquequirao is slightly cheaper because Machu Picchu ticket, train and hotel night drop away – but so does Machu Picchu.
Is there a group discount?
Not through the platform. If you travel as four or more, ask the operator directly for a private tour – for Choquequirao the surcharge is often small, because groups are small anyway.
